MARCH 2025 FLOOD RECOVERY EFFORTS CONTINUE IN DOUGLAS COUNTY

KQEN News Radio

While the Douglas County Commissioners, County Emergency Management Team, and other county staff work with evaluation and assessment teams from Oregon’s Office of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Administration this week, local recovery efforts continue.

Douglas County has partnered with Glide Revitalization to be the Long-Term Recovery Group for the recent flood event. A county release said Glide Rev’s experience and knowledge in developing and managing a long-term recovery effort for the 2020 Archie Creek Fire laid the groundwork for the non-profit agency that exists today. Glide Rev is a federally designated LTRG working to support communities impacted by disasters.

For property owners and business owners impacted by flooding, every action taken strengthens the county’s case for critical state and federal support. The county has provided a 1-2-3 Flood Recovery Action Plan.

  • 1- Complete the Douglas County Flood Damage Assessment Survey. This helps document the widespread impact and is required for assistance.
  • 2 – Fill out the Long-Term Recovery Group form via Glide Revitalization
  • 3 – Send photos of damage to Douglas County Emergency Management

Links to file all of these are posted on the March 2025 Flood Event Information page on the county government website: https://www.douglascountyor.gov/

DRIVER FALLS ASLEEP, PICKUP STRIKES SUV ON FREEWAY

KQEN News Radio

A driver fell asleep, leading to a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 5 in the Canyonville area early Sunday.

An Oregon State Police report said at approximately 3:15 a.m. the pickup struck an SUV near milepost 100 in the Canyonville area. The pickup came to a rest on its side. All occupants of both vehicles declined medical attention. A towing company removed the pickup from the crash scene.

UNPRECEDENTED CATARACT SURGERY ON TWO AFRICAN LIONS IN ONE DAY

KQEN News Radio

Wildlife Safari has announced that renowned veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Casandra Bliss of Bliss Animal Eye Care in Medford has achieved a remarkable milestone – successfully performing cataract surgery on two female African lions in a single day.

A safari release said the lionesses, Serafina and Mtai, were recently diagnosed with cataracts by Dr. Bliss following the initial discovery of cloudiness developing in each of their right eyes by the park’s dedicated carnivore team and veterinary staff. Cataracts can cause blurred vision and sensitivity to light, and the surgery helps restore clear sight.

Dr. Bliss has been a trusted partner of Wildlife Safari since 2014 and has provided expert care for a variety of species at the park – including bears, cheetahs, lions, flamingos, and lemurs. This procedure involves removing the cloudy lens – the cataract – and replacing it with a clear artificial one. To do this, Doctor Bliss used a technique which uses ultrasonic energy to break up the cataract, creating space for the new artificial lens to be placed.

To ensure the procedure caused minimal disruption to the animals, Dr. Bliss assembled a specialized team of veterinary experts and surgical equipment professionals from across the country. A crew carefully disassembled and transported Dr. Bliss’ specialized Zeiss surgical microscope – a vital tool for the delicate procedure in the sanctuary’s surgical suite. The custom lenses, based on precise preoperative measurements, were crafted in Germany while the ultrasonic surgical tool for the procedure was supplied by a Swiss company.

Wildlife Safari’s Head Veterinarian Dr. Benji Alcantar said, “We are closely monitoring the lion’s recovery, but the procedure itself went perfectly: As of Monday, Dr. Bliss and Wildlife Safari say that Serafina and Mtai have made a full recovery with improved vision and a better quality of life.
