ROSEBURG HAS RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR TUESDAY

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg had a record high temperature for the date on Tuesday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 61 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. That beat the previous record high for December 17th, which was 60 degrees, set in 1999.

Forecasters said having a high in the 60s this time of year is “pretty rare”, as is setting a record high temperature only days before the start of winter. The normal high temperature for this week in Roseburg is 48 degrees. The warm weather was isolated to the Umpqua Valley, with Grants Pass getting to 50 degrees and Medford reaching 51 degrees.

Roseburg is expecting a high of 55 degrees Wednesday. That’s well below the record high for December 18th, which was 63 degrees, set in 1959.

UNION TRYING TO HELP AFFECTED ALBERTSON’S EMPLOYEES

A spokesperson for the union representing some of the affected employees at Albertsons in Roseburg says that are trying to help them find new jobs, after company officials announced that the store would close permanently by early in February next year.

UFCW Local 555 Communications Coordinator Miles Eshaia told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN: “UFCW Local 555 is working with the company to secure positions for affected employees at the nearby Safeway store and will also work with members to secure positions at other local union employers”. Eshaia said, “We encourage the community to support union businesses like Sherm’s and Safeway. We are committed to ensuring our members are taken care of during this transition”.

Officials with Albertson’s said the location was being closed because it is an “underperforming store”.  While the building housing Albertsons was constructed in 2001, the chain has had a store in Roseburg since at least the mid-1970s. Over 80 employees are seeking a new job.

COUNCIL APPROVES AMENDMENT FOR SEISMIC REHABILITATION GRANT

The Sutherlin City Council recently approved a contract amendment for the Seismic Rehabilitation Grant for the Sutherlin Fire Station.

A city release said SFD command staff have been working diligently for the past two years towards this grant with additional upgrades with support from the city’s Community Development Department and Finance Department. The grant covers the cost of the design and construction to bring the fire station up to the latest standards of seismic integrity in hopes of preventing significant damage from an earthquake. The City of Sutherlin previously selected ZCS Engineering for the design and project management and S+B James as the General Contractor.

In addition, infrastructure upgrades are taking place, increasing the safety of firefighters and operations of the fire department. Upgrades include a vehicle exhaust collection system, LED lighting, replacing an aging electrical panel, upgrading the fire station tapout system, replacing a 28-year-old turnout washer and adding an extension to one apparatus bay to ensure space needed for a future ladder truck. Additionally, the extension of the bay will give firefighters a work area and will create a safety buffer between firefighters and multiple air compressors that require hearing protection. The grant will also provide the fire station with new roofs, correcting water leaks in the station and apparatus bays, as well as making the fire department more efficient for both utilities and operations, while safer for firefighters.

Fire Chief Mike Lane said, “We are excited to begin the seismic upgrade to the main fire station”. Lane said, “This allows us the opportunity to make some changes that will enhance our ability to respond when the public needs us in an emergency. We are also adding some features that will provide a cleaner and safer working environment for our firefighters on a daily basis”.

The release said construction is slated to begin just after January 1st and take approximately three to five months to complete. During the first phase of construction, firefighters will be working and living in mobile living quarters on the fire department property.

TRIBE RESPONDS AFTER GOVERNOR REQUESTS ADDITIONAL COMMENT TIME

The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians is responding after Governor Tina Kotek asked the U.S. Department of the Interior to extend the 30-day public comment period regarding a Medford casino that has been proposed by the Coquille Indian Tribe.

Tribal Chairman Carla Keene said, “Its very encouraging that the Governor’s Office has requested an extension. We also believe that the first urban. off-reservation casino in Oregon deserves adequate time for thoughtful evaluation and consultation, not just the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas”. Keene said, “The state’s position of “One Casino Per Tribe” works, and should not be circumnavigated by anyone”.

Governor Kotek’s letter submitted late last week said, “this decision carries significant implications for Oregon’s communities, economic landscape, and broader state interests. It is critical to ensure that all stakeholders, tribal nations, local governments, and residents alike have sufficient time to thoughtfully consider the FEIS and provide meaningful feedback”.

Keene said, “We have said continually that a casino in Medford is bad for the people living there, and it will irreversibly alter the abilities of the other five Tribes to care for their people and communities”. Keene said, “These are big impacts that will reverberate, not just around Oregon, but across the Northwest, allowing tribes to leapfrog to the next big city”.
