BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THURSDAY
KQEN News Radio

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Thursday night at 10:00 p.m. for coastal areas on the south-central and southern Oregon coast.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said a moderate risk of sneaker waves is expected.
It applies to the beaches and shorelines of Douglas, Coos and Curry counties.
Forecasters said sneaker waves can run up significantly farther on beaches than normal, including over rocks and jetties. These waves can suddenly knock people off their feet and quickly pull them into the cold ocean waters, resulting in serious injury or death. Waves may also lift driftwood logs, trapping anyone caught underneath.
People should avoid climbing on rocks and jetties. Stay away from the ocean and remain out of the water to avoid hazardous conditions.
ROSEBURG WITH RECORD HIGH: BREAKING 65-YEAR OLD MARK
KQEN News Radio
Roseburg had a record breaking high on Wednesday, eclipsing a mark that had stood for 65-years.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 65 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. That broke the previous record high for December 18th, which was 63 degrees set in 1959. The normal high temperature in Roseburg this week is 48 degrees. That’s 17 degrees below Wednesdays high.
It was also the second record breaking day in a row, after the airport got to 61 degrees on Tuesday. The previous record for December 17th was 60 degrees, set in 1999.
A cooling trend is expected to begin on Thursday with increasing clouds and a high of 56 degrees. Rain is likely to begin in the Umpqua Valley early Saturday and continue through the weekend.
OREGON’S NONFARM PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT RAISES 5,100 JOBS
KQEN News Radio

In November, Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment gained 5,100 jobs, following a revised increase of 3,500 jobs in October.
A State of Oregon Employment Department release said November’s gains were largest in health care and social assistance which rose by 2,300 jobs. Construction added 2,100 jobs, while professional and business services gained 700 jobs. Declines were largest in leisure and hospitality, which lost 700 jobs.
State Employment Economist Gail Krumenauer said private health care and social assistance has been adding jobs very rapidly since June 2022. Krumenauer said it expanded by 41,700 jobs or 15.6 percent, during that 29-month period. The fastest growing component during that time was social assistance, which added 17,800 jobs or 27 percent. Nursing and residential care facilities gained 9,400 jobs or 19.3 percent. The two other component industries added jobs, but grew less rapidly: Hospitals added 6,800 jobs or 11.9 percent while ambulatory health care services gained 10,200 jobs or 10.7 percent.
OED said construction rebounded in November from a three-month dip, returning the sector’s total employment to 117,500, about where it had been from July 2022 to August 2024.
Krumenauer said in the past 12 months, health care and social assistance grew rapidly, adding 17,500 jobs or 6.0 percent. Government added 6,900 jobs or 2.2 percent. In that time, only two major industries declined by 1,000 jobs or more: retail trade lost 1,700 jobs or 0.8 percent while leisure and hospitality declined by 1,400 jobs or 0.7 percent. About half of the major industries were essentially flat over the year, with job changes of less than 1,200 in either direction.
Oregon’s unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in November and 4.0 percent in October. It has consistently remained between 4.0 percent and 4.2 percent since October 2023. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in November and 4.1 percent in October.
VOLUNTEER SITE HOST NEEDED AT ODFW’S CANYONVILLE SITE
KQEN News Radio

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for a volunteer site host at the Canyonville winter steelhead acclimation site.
An ODFW release said the site is located in the City of Canyonville along lower Canyon Creek, a tributary of the South Umpqua River.
Site hosts typically assist ODFW biologists in winter steelhead brood stock collection, monitoring the fish trapping site and reporting observations to the biologists, fish rearing, cleaning and maintaining the site and interacting with the public.
The position is available now until the end of April. While start dates are flexible, preference is given to candidates that can start by February. Top candidates must pass a fingerprint based criminal history check, a driver’s record check and other requirements including ODFW policies and procedures.
The release said hosts must have their own RV. ODFW provides water, septic, electricity and propane.
Interested applicants should contact ODFW at 541-464-2157 or via email: levi.m.simmons@odfw.oregon.gov
DTO PRESENTS AWARDS COMMUNITY MEMBERS
KQEN News Radio

The Douglas Timber Operators recently gave two community members awards for their unique, long-standing service to the local community and the management of the forests.
The 2024 Tough Tree Award was presented to Swanson Group CEO, Steve Swanson. The award is given to recognize individuals “for efforts above and beyond the call of duty for the forest products industry, timber workers, and natural resource dependent communities”. DTO Executive Director Matt Hill said, “Steve is not an ivory tower kind of CEO. He’s in the trenches with us, and stays in all the hard fights for sustainable forest management in Oregon”. Hill said, “My appreciation for Steve deepened in 2020 when our community experienced the Archie Creek Fire. Our DTO membership discussed a relief fund to help those who lost their homes. No one reacted faster and more generously than Steve Swanson”.
The 2024 High Climber Award was presented to former Douglas County Commissioner Doug Robertson, who currently serves as Executive Director of the Association of O&C Counties. The award was presented by Hill and County Commissioner Tim Freeman. Freeman said, “County Commissioners have to know a lot about a lot of different issues. Every now and then we get a County Commissioner that takes the time to know everything about one specific issue. That is Doug Robertson. Doug has the history and a passion for the timber industry”. Freeman also said, “We all appreciate Doug’s knowledge, experience and approach. Not only does he know this issue, but he’s fantastic about teaching others and sharing his knowledge”.
The awards were given out at DTO’s annual Christmas social event last week.
EXTENSION WORKSHOP ON DIGITAL MAPPING APPS
KQEN News Radio

The Oregon State University Extension Service is holding a workshop on learning how to use digital mapping apps for land management activities.
“Chart the Unknown: Getting Started with Digital Mapping Apps” will be held on Wednesday, January 22nd. The event will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Extension office on Southeast Douglas Avenue, just east of the courthouse.

Participants will learn how to use their smart phone or tablet to calculate areas and distances of property features and monitor road problems, insect damage, invasive plants and more. Attendees will also be shown how to create PDF maps using information collected in the field. The outdoor practice sessions will be walking distance from the classroom.
Participants are asked to bring their own smart phone or tablet, and a laptop computer to class.
The cost to attend is $10 per person or $15 for a couple sharing materials.
