HUMAN TRAFFICKING TASK FORCE SHOWING NEW CURRICULUM

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Human Trafficking Task Force will preview a new curriculum on educating youth to avoid becoming a victim of exploitation during an event Thursday night.

The program, hosted by the task force and the Zonta Club of Roseburg will feature an educational video intended for high school students. It will be presented at the Roseburg Public Library from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In 2022, DCHTTF and Zonta combined forces to provide a trafficking prevention curriculum to local middle and high school students. This made Douglas County the first county in the state to provide this material to its students. The task force believes the county is particularly vulnerable to human trafficking because of its proximity to major traffic corridors such as Interstate 5, and highways 101, 38 and 42, increasing use of social media and a social-economic dynamic that increases potential familial trafficking.

Nationally half of trafficked victims are between the ages of 12-17, and the average age of being recruited is 13. Schools who have used the Teens Against Trafficking curriculum were very positive about the material. A survey noted that nearly 100 percent of the students reported it taught them to recognize signs of trafficking, triggers that make people vulnerable, and how anyone, regardless of gender, race, or social status, can be trafficked.

The task force and Zonta have continued to work with In Our Backyard, the creators of Teens Against Trafficking to improve the material. The completed curriculum for both high school freshmen and seniors is available on video. Teachers can show it to provide a 26-minute program that defines forms of trafficking and provides real-life examples.

The event at the library is free and open to the public. Parental discretion is advised for youth that are under age 12 due to the topic. For more information on the task force, go to: https://endtraffickingdouglascounty.org/

DRAZAN INTRODUCES LEGISLATION SHE SAYS WILL PROTECT WOMEN’S SPORTS

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, designated as National Girls and Women in Sports Day, House Republican Leader Christine Drazan introduced legislation she says will restore safety and fairness for female athletes in Oregon’s K-12 schools.

A release said LC 3895 requires schools to designate athletic competitions and extracurricular sports according to biological sex. The legislative concept prohibits biological males from participating in athletic competitions or extracurricular sports designated for biological females.

Drazan said, “Women have fought for – and earned – respect and support for themselves in sports and have made incredible gains in doing so”. Drazan said, “We can respect the dignity of every individual without endangering women in sports”.

Drazan said a statewide pole commissioned by House Republicans revealed that 60 percent Oregonians oppose OSAA’s current policy allowing biological makes to complete in women’s sports”.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports”, which bans biological males from competing in women’s by aligning federal policy with Title IX – a law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex for schools that receive federal funding.

Drazan’s bill will be introduced later in the week and will include sponsors from both the House and Senate.

SENATOR BONHAM ATTENDS SIGNING OF EXECUTIVE ORDER – WOMEN’S SPORTS

KQEN News Radio

Wednesday, on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Senate Republican Leader Daniel Bonham attended the signing of President Donald Trump’s executive order that he says protects the integrity of women’s sports.

A release said the order ensures that women’s athletics remain exclusively for biological woman by aligning federal policy with Title IX, the law designed to protect women’s education and athletic opportunities.

Bonham said, “For too long, female athletes have been forces to compete on an uneven playing field. Today’s executive order restores fairness and upholds the fundamental principle of equal opportunity in women’s sports.”  Bonham said, “Oregon girls deserve the chance to compete, break records, and win championships without biological males taking their opportunities away”.

Bonham has introduced Senate Bill 618, which requires school districts to designate athletic competitions and extracurricular sports based on biological sex. Bonham said the legislation will compel the Oregon School Activities Association to reverse what he terms “its unfair gender identity participation rule” and restore competitive fairness in girl’s athletics.

Bonham said, ’80 percent of Americans agree – women’s sports should be for women”. Bonham added, “This executive order is a huge step forward, and Oregon leaders ought to follow suit to ensure our girls are protected”.
