STOVE FIRE DISPLACES ROSEBURG FAMILY

KQEN News Radio

A Roseburg family was displaced following a stove fire on Thursday afternoon.

Fire Chief Tyler Christopherson of the Roseburg Fire Department said at approximately 3:10 p.m. fire crews responded to a residential structure fire with reported smoke inside the home in the 800 block of West Princeton Avenue.

Christopherson said firefighters arrived on scene to find a multi-family apartment complex with nothing showing. Upon investigation, firefighters found smoke inside an apartment with evidence of a stove fire that had been extinguished.

Christopherson said fire crews found heavy heat and smoke inside the apartment and quickly checked for any possible extension from the fire. The fire was discovered when residents arrived home from work and found the home full of smoke with a smoldering stove fire. No one was home at the time of the fire.

The residence sustained structural, smoke and water damage. A family of fire, including two adults and three children, were displaced due to the fire. A family dog and cat did not survive the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Christopherson said a fire investigator responded to the scene of the fire. The cause is currently under investigation.  Seven firefighters assisted with firefighting operations.

Christopherson said RFD would like to remind people about the importance of working smoke alarms and ensuring they have the appropriate number of smoke alarms installed in their home. Smoke alarms should be on every level of a residence, outside each sleeping area and in every bedroom.

According to the Geiger Gibson Program Website, the Emerging Leader Award was established in 2007 to showcase the accomplishments of a new generation of health center leaders. Candidates for the awards are nominated by the leaders of their health center, primary care association or network, and awardees are selected by a committee drawn from senior health center movement leadership.

Aviva CEO KC Bolton said, “We couldn’t be prouder of Leah for being recognized as a Geiger Gibson Emerging Leader”. Bolton said, “This award is a significant accomplishment, and it speaks volumes about Leah’s leadership, dedication and the impacts she’s making – not just here at Aviva Health, but in the broader community health movement. Leah is the kind of leader who rolls up her sleeves, digs in and gets things done, always with a focus on what’s best for our patients and our team”. GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS FEBRUARY EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI AWARENESS MONTH

KQEN News Radio

Governor Tina Kotek has proclaimed February Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Month in Oregon.

A release from the Oregon Department of Emergency Management said in the past, Oregon has suffered considerable damage from moderate earthquake events. That includes the 1993 Scotts Mills and Klamath Falls earthquakes and from a deadly tsunami that originated in Alaska in 1964.

OED said scientific evidence indicates that the State of Oregon is at risk for a much larger event associated with the Cascadia Subduction Zone that is expected to generate strong ground shaking and a destructive tsunami, similar to the event that occurred in northeast Japan on March 11th, 2011.

The release said loss of life and property is minimized by natural hazard mitigation planning and grant funding at the state, Tribal, and local levels, which reduce the impact of disasters through risk assessment and mitigation actions – such as seismic strengthening of existing buildings and public education on local tsunami evacuation routes.

As a result, OED, within its role as chair of the Interagency Hazard Mitigation Team, will be working with IHMT member agencies, federal partners, local jurisdictions, and neighboring states, to highlight jurisdictional earthquake and tsunami mitigation strategies and provide education and information about individual preparedness for Oregon residents and visitors throughout the month of February and beyond.

Watch OED’s social media channels and its website: Oregon Department of Emergency Management : Oregon Department of Emergency Management : State of Oregon for preparedness tips and more information.
