AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY THROUGH 12:00 P.M. THURSDAY

KQEN News Radio

An Air Stagnation Advisory remains in effect through 12:00 p.m. Thursday for parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said poor air quality will continue. This is due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will continue to trap pollutants.

The Advisory area includes central Douglas County, Josephine and Jackson counties, eastern Curry County, the south central Oregon coast, Klamath Basin and parts of Lake County.

Forecasters said poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems.

WINTER STORM WARNING FROM 1:00 A.M. FRIDAY TO 10:00 A.M. SATURDAY

KQEN News Radio

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Saturday for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations between 12 and 24 inches above 5,000 feet, with up to 30 inches possible over the highest peaks and ridges. Winds will gust as high as 50 miles per hour.

The Warning area includes the southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to highways 138 and 230 near Diamond Lake, Highway 62 near Crater Lake, Highway 140 near Lake of the Woods, Highway 58 at Willamette Pass and the Mt. Ashland Ski Road up to the resort.

Forecasters said visibilities may drop below one quarter mile due to falling and blowing snow. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages.

Snowfall rates from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday and from 10:00 p.m. Friday to 4:00 a.m. Saturday could reach 1 inch per hour at times.

Those who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency. Call 511 or visit www.tripcheck.com for updated road information. People should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

UCC NURSING INTRODUCES PRACTICAL NURSING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Community College has introduced a Practical Nursing certificate program that leads to licensure within its Allied Health Department.

A UCC release said this addition creates more opportunities within the nursing pathway, beginning with the Nursing Assistant program, progressing to the PN program, and advancing through UCC’s Registered Nursing program to Oregon Health & Science University for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing.  In addition, there is an option to get started while enrolled at Roseburg High School through the dual enrollment program.

The release said UCC is creating many more options for students to stay in the community and participate in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. UCC maintains an agreement in which students can dually enroll in the OHSU BSN program. After they graduate from UCC, they are already accepted at OHSU to complete their bachelor’s degrees.

UCC Nursing Program Executive Director Chelsea Gillespie-Towne said this will provide a fast track for students to enroll in both programs and complete a master’s degree. Gillespie-Towne said, “There options will allow students to balance work and life and still graduate with a bachelor’s degree, enabling them to excel in the work force”.

The release said the job placement rate for registered nurses from the latest class of UCC graduates in 2024 was 100 percent, of which 40 graduates reported acceptance of employment as registered nurses upon successful completion of the registered nursing licensure exam. UCC’s exam pass rate has consistently been, on average, over 90 percent for the past six years.

Enrollment is open and applications for the fall term nursing program close on February 28th.

STEWART PARK DRIVE BRIDGE TO CLOSE

KQEN News Radio

Stewart Park Drive Bridge in Roseburg will be closed to vehicle traffic for rehabilitation work starting on Monday, February 10th.

A city release said the steel truss bridge, commonly referred to as the Green Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic over the South Umpqua River until Monday, November 3rd, while a contractor rehabilitates the bridge. However, the bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists during the project.

Traffic control signs will be in place to detour motorists around the closure. Drivers can access the south entrance of the Roseburg VA Medical Center from Stewart Parkway, then travel through Stewart Park to the VA facility’s entrance just north of the bridge.

Public Works Department staff want to stress the importance of keeping vehicles away from the work site to protect workers safety and because of the difficulty for vehicles to turn around at either end of the bridge.

ROSEBURG GEOCACHING KICKOFF EVENT ON SATURDAY

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg Parks and Recreation will launch its next geocaching series this Saturday.

A city release said the Discover Roseburg 14 Land of Umpqua Geocache Series kick-off is a free, family-friendly event designed to draw people of all ages outside to experience more of the city and its businesses. The event will be held rain or shine.

Participants are asked to bring a small phone or other device equipped with a Global Positioning System, or satellite-based radio navigation system. Using a GPS to follow coordinated printed on passports, participants will hunt for five real-world geocaches hidden around town, plus 15 virtual geocaches at special locations. Geocachers will navigate to all the spots and fill out their passports along the way.

People who find all 20 geocaches can redeem their passports for a limited-edition collector’s geocoin with a trackable ID number that will commemorate the sport’s 25th anniversary. Only 200 geocoins will be available. The geocache challenge will continue until all the geocoins have been awarded.
