AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY BEGINS TUESDAY FOR MUCH OF REGION

KQEN News Radio

An Air Stagnation Advisory is in effect from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through 12:00 p.m. Friday for much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said strong valley inversions will result in weak winds, and poor mixing and ventilation. This will result in stagnant air conditions that will trap pollutants near the surface.

The Advisory area includes central Douglas County and its eastern foothills, Josephine and Jackson counties and eastern Curry County. It applies to Roseburg, Grants Pass, Medford and nearby communities.

Forecasters said poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems. People with respiratory illness should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution during periods of stagnant air.

UCC COMPLETES FIRST PHASE OF STUDENT HOUSING RENOVATIONS

KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Community College has completed the first phase of student housing renovations on Southeast Jackson Street in downtown Roseburg.
A UCC release said twenty-nine students have moved into new accommodations, located in the former Newberry’s department store. The building had been the offices of Redeemer’s Fellowship for over two decades.

Executive Director of Communications & Marketing for the college, Suzi Pritchard, said the development of student housing in downtown Roseburg is a key component of the school’s strategic plan to expand programming while providing students with accessible living spaces. Pritchard said the initiative also aims to enhance the region’s economic and cultural vibrancy.

UCC President Dr. Rachel Pokrandt said, “We are proud to play a role in the revitalization of downtown Roseburg while supporting the college’s growth and the community’s success”. Pokrandt said, “Our students love living in the heart of our community and the community loves them in return”.

The release said currently more than 180 students live in UCC housing across multiple buildings in Roseburg. Since 2023, UCC has acquired over 62,000 square feet of downtown property. That includes the former Newberry’s building which is now known as Hawk’s Hideaway, Hawk’s Nest, which is the former Flegel Center, and the former Post Office building, which has yet to be developed.

These acquisitions and renovations have been completed without incurring debt. Pritchard said by repurposing existing buildings, UCC is reducing costs for the community while contributing to downtown Roseburg’s economic vitality and ongoing development.

WILD SPRING CHINOOK HARVEST PROHIBITED ON MAINSTEM RIVER

KQEN News Radio

On Friday, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that a temporary rule will prohibit wild spring Chinook salmon harvest on the mainstem Umpqua River and reduce the North Umpqua bag limit.

An ODFW release said from February 1st through June 30th:

  • Only hatchery spring Chinook may be kept on the mainstem Umpqua River. Harvesting wild spring Chinook, both jacks and adults, is prohibited
  • Just one adult wild spring Chinook per day, 10 per year, may be kept on the North Umpqua River.
  • Anglers may still retain hatchery spring Chinook.

The temporary rule is meant to help protect populations returning to the South and North Umpqua rivers as biologists forecast low returns of adult wild spring Chinook this year.
The release said South Umpqua adult wild spring Chinook were low in 2024 with just 111 wild fish, while runs on the North Umpqua were also well below average. This combination of low returns in 2024 and a low forecast in 2025 is triggering the restriction of wild spring Chinook harvesting according to the sliding scale in the ODFW Coastal Multi-Species Conservation and Management Plan.

ODFW continues to work with its partners: the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, and NOAA Fisheries, to share information and address habitat and passage issues for spring Chinook in the upper South Umpqua River.

The CMP was adopted in 2014 by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission. It was developed with help from stakeholders within the Umpqua Basin along the Oregon coast.
