AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY THROUGH 12:00 P.M. FRIDAY FOR MUCH OF SOUTHERN OREGON
KQEN News Radio
An Air Stagnation Advisory is in effect through 12:00 p.m. Friday for much of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said strong valley inversions will result in weak winds, poor mixing and ventilation. This will lead to stagnant air conditions that will trap pollutants near the surface.
The Advisory area includes central Douglas County and its eastern foothills, Josephine and Jackson counties and eastern Curry County.
Forecasters said poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems. Those with respiratory illness should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution during periods of stagnant air.
MYRTLE CREEK POLICE ARREST 2 IN SEX CRIME CASES
KQEN News Radio
Myrtle Creek Police have arrested 2 men in separate sex crime cases.
Detective Kevin Taggart said on November 10th, MCPD began an investigation into a male subject who was allegedly having a graphic sexual conversation with an underage female. Taggart said the male, identified as 23-year-old Bleu Blaze Donahue, of Eugene, agreed to meet the juvenile for sexual contact. Donahue reportedly drove to Myrtle Creek on December 29th to meet with the juvenile. He was arrested as he pulled into the parking lot of a local mini mart. Donahue was charged with online sexual corruption of a child in the first and second-degree, as well as luring a minor. He was detained without bail and was released on December 30th.
Taggart said in an unrelated investigation, police began looking into another subject identified as 32-year-old Jacob Seth Canfield of La Grande. Canfield allegedly carried on an online relationship with a juvenile female starting on November 18th. Taggart said Canfield reportedly agreed to meet the juvenile for sexual contact, even renting a motel room for the two. On Monday. Canfield drove from La Grande, almost an eight-hour trip, to meet the juvenile. He was taken into custody and charged with online sexual corruption of a child in the first and second-degree and for a warrant. Canfield was detained on $5,000 bail.
Taggart said MCPD would like to thank the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Eugene Police Department, La Grande Police Department and the Oregon State Police for assisting in the investigations.
The MCPD release said parents should monitor their children’s online activities as these cases show that people meaning to do harm to children will travel to do so. Taggart said parents need to know who their kids are communicating with and should monitor their internet usage.
WINSTON POLICE ARREST MAN AFTER VEHICLE BREAK-INS
KQEN News Radio
Winston Police recently arrested a man after a series of vehicle break-ins.
A WPD release said on the night of January 1st, officers began investigating the incidents which took place on Darrell Avenue and Parkway Drive. By January 2nd, they identified the suspect as 42-year-old Richard Harris of Roseburg. Officers contacted Harris and arrested him without incident.
Harris was charged with six counts of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, three counts of second-degree criminal trespass, and two counts each of theft in the third-degree, theft in the second-degree, and criminal mischief in the second-degree. Harris is detained on $54, 000 bail.
The investigation is ongoing and WPD is urging residents living on Darrell Avenue and Parkway Drive to check their vehicles for missing items and review any surveillance footage they may have.
CITY OF ROSEBURG LEAF COLLECTION PROGRAM WRAPPING UP
KQEN News Radio
The City of Roseburg leaf collection program is close to wrapping up.
Public Works Director Ryan Herinckx told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the goal of the program is to give all residences the same level of service, which typically means 3 leaf collections during the program. Herinckx said leaf pickup begins in the Laurelwood neighborhood and continues clockwise around the city.
The crew is currently wrapping up in the Hucrest neighborhood and will pick up in the Northwest Garden Valley area next. Herinckx said that means for Laurelwood, West Harvard, West Lookingglass and parts of Hucrest, the leaf pickup has been completed for the year. Public Works staff will continue moving clockwise until they reach the Mill/Pine area. This could take another two weeks to complete.
Herinckx said the 3rd round of leaf pickup is taking longer than normal due to the heavy rains and winds the city has experienced recently. He said the crew has had to pause leaf pickup on occasion to remove wind fallen trees from roadways as well as address high water issues. Herinckx said the heavy rains mat down the leaves, making them harder to vacuum up, and causing them to plug the machine more frequently.
CITY OF ROSEBURG TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR TWO COMMISSIONS
KQEN News Radio
The City of Roseburg is taking applications for two commissions.
A city release said there is currently a vacancy on the Roseburg Planning Commission and 2 vacancies on the Public Works Commission. The commissions serve in an advisory capacity to the city council.
The Planning Commission vacancy and one Public Works Commission vacancy must be filled by someone living in the city. The other Public Works Commission vacancy can be filled by someone who lives within Roseburg’s urban services boundary, but outside city limits.
The person appointed to fill the Planning Commission vacancy would serve until December 2028. One volunteer appointed to the Public Works Commission will finish a term expiring at the end of 2025, while the other will serve a three-year term that expires at the end of 2027.
Online applications can be found on city’s “Commissions” webpage: https://www.cityofroseburg.org/your-government/commissions
DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE HAS TIPS TO EASE TAX-FILING STRESS
KQEN News Radio
The Oregon Department of Revenue has tips to ease tax-filing stress now that the new year is here.
Taxpayers should make sure their information, like their username, password and address, is current at Revenue Online, the state’s internet tax portal and verify any estimated tax payments they’ve made. Those who don’t have a Revenue Online account can sign up on the agency’s website: https://www.oregon.gov/dor/pages/index.aspx
Taxpayers should gather and organize their tax records. That includes:
*Form W-2s from employers
*Form 1099s from banks, issuing agencies and other payers including unemployment compensation, dividends, distributions from a pension, annuity, retirement plan, or other non-employee compensation
*For 1099-K, 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, or other income statement if they worked in the gig economy.
Taxpayers should check out the Internal Revenue Service Direct File eligibility screener. The IRS estimates that 640,000 Oregon taxpayers will be among the 30 million U.S. taxpayers who will be able to use the combination of IRS Direct File and Direct File Oregon in 2025 to e-file both their federal and state returns for free.
Residents should use a bank account to speed tax refunds with direct deposit.
Tax preparers should be chosen wisely because taxpayers are responsible for all the information on their return, no matter who prepares it for them.
To get tax forms, check the status of their refund, or to make tax payments go to the agency’s website: https://www.oregon.gov/dor/pages/index.aspx
