Roseburg Area Morning News
AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY CONTINUES THROUGH NOON FRIDAY
KQEN News Radio
An Air Stagnation Advisory remains in effect through 12:00 p.m. Friday for much of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said strong valley inversions will result in weak winds, and poor mixing and ventilation. This will lead to stagnant air conditions that will trap pollutants near the surface.
The Advisory area includes central Douglas County and its eastern foothills, Josephine and Jackson counties and eastern Curry County. It applies to the cities of Roseburg, Grants Pass, Cave Junction and Medford.
Forecasters said poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems.
CREWS RESPOND TO OVERNIGHT FIRE AT C&D LUMBER IN RIDDLE
KQEN News Radio
Crews with the Riddle Fire Protection District responded to a fire at C&D Lumber in Riddle at approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Fire Chief Devin Loughridge said first-arriving resources reported the whole end of one of the buildings was on fire with extension to much of the structure. Loughridge said both the first and second story of the building were involved. Suppression efforts were hampered by the building being partially demolished with the stability of the structure being unknown.
Loughridge said after several hours, the final resources cleared the scene. The cause of the fire was smoldering embers from a cutting torch that had not been extinguished.
RFPD was assisted by Tri City Fire, Myrtle Creek Fire, South Umpqua Fire, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Pacific Power and Avista Gas. 19 firefighters were on scene.
UMPQUA NATIONAL FOREST TO HOST MEETING ON AMENDMENT FOR FOREST PLAN
KQEN News Radio
The Umpqua National Forest will host a community meeting to share information about proposed changes to the Northwest Forest Plan.
A UNF release said the public is invited to attend and learn more about the Draft Environmental Statement.
The meeting will be January 28th in the Ford Room at the Roseburg Public Library, on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard. It will run from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Northwest Forest Plan was created in 1994 to conserve habitat for wildlife and forests while supporting local communities. After 30 years, the Forest Service is amending the plan to address today’s challenges, including wildfire risks and economic needs.
The Draft Environmental Impact Statement explains the proposed changes and is open for public comment until March 17th. The release said some of the key focuses of the updated plan include:
- Reducing wildfire risks to communities and forests
- Supporting local economies with sustainable timber and restoration work
- Adapting to changing climate to increase resiliency to extreme weather events, like drought and wildfire
- Honoring trust responsibilities to tribal governments and communities by including them in land management planning and implementing forest management practices
At the meeting, residents can talk directly with Forest Service staff and experts who worked on the plan, look at detailed maps of the area and proposed updates, pick up fact sheets to take home and learn how to share thoughts during the public comment period.

SHERM’S THUNDERBIRD TO DONATE SEMI-TRUCK OF FOOD TO FEEDING UMPQUA
KQEN News Radio
Sherm’s Thunderbird Market will donate a semi-truck load of food to Feeding Umpqua on Friday.
A release said Steve Olsrud, co-owner of Sherm’s Thunderbird and Food for Less Markets, will accompany one of their trucks at 11:00 a.m. as they continue their annual tradition. Last year’s trailer truck contained 29,864 pounds of food.
This year marks the 19th year that Sherm’s has donated to the program. Since that time, the company has donated over 530,000 pounds of food. Feeding Umpqua Manager Sarah McGregor said, “We are so grateful for the Olsrud family’s continued support and generosity. Sherm’s has been such an incredible partner in the fight against hunger”. McGregor said, “This incredible donation will support our continued work providing emergency food to our network of 16 emergency food pantries throughout Douglas County and the patrons they serve”.
The release said the donation could not have come at a better time, as more people are accessing food now than since Sherm’s started donating in 2006. McGregor said, “Together we are fighting hunger and feeding hope”.

BLM APPROVES UPDATED CASCADE-SISKIYOU NATIONAL MONUMENT PLAN
KQEN News Radio
On Tuesday, the Bureau of Land Management issued its approved resource management plan and Record of Decision for the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument.
A BLM release said this will guide management of the monument’s 113,500 acres in southwestern Oregon to protect its biodiversity and important historic resources for public access and recreational opportunities.
Cascade Siskiyou National Monument was established by Presidential Proclamation in 2000 and expanded by another Presidential Proclamation in 2017. The area provides habitat for an array of rate plant and animal species across its three ecoregions: Cascade, Klamath and Siskiyou. This includes ancient sugar and ponderosa pine, rock buckwheat, tall bugbane, the threatened northern spotted owl, endangered gray wolves, Lost River sucker and more. Native American occupancy of the area dates back thousands of years and the monument is home to exceptional natural features, including Pilot Rock.
