WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR MOUNTAIN AREAS BEGINS EARLY WEDNESDAY
KQEN News Radio

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5:00 a.m. Wednesday through 5:00 a.m. Thursday for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said snow is expected, with accumulations between 5 and 10 inches. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 50 miles per hour.
The Advisory area includes the south central and southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies from Highway 140 northward including Lake of the Woods, Crater and Diamond lakes, as well as highways 140, 62, 230 and 138.
Forecasters said travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow will result in lower visibility.
Motorists should slow down and use caution. Call 511 or visit www.tripcheck.com for road information.
SENATORS CALL FOR INVESTIGATION INTO ADMINISTRATION’S PURGE OF WORKERS
KQEN News Radio

Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, and a group of colleagues, are urging the non-partisan Government Accountability Office to launch an investigation into how the recent mass firings of probationary federal workers have impacted American’s health and safety.
A joint release said in recent weeks, President Trump has fired at least 25,000 probationary federal employees. Despite termination letters from many agencies citing “poor performance”, the senators claim probationary employees appear to have been fired in indiscriminate batches, regardless of their individual performance.
Thousands of these fired workers were responsible for protecting American’s health and safety, across areas like air travel, flood and wildfire response, infectious disease control, nuclear safety, veteran’s health care and benefits, food safety, and managing the opioid epidemic.
In their letter, the senators wrote, “Rather than make government more efficient, these firings appear to have created massive inefficiencies and put the American people at risk”.
The release said as the Trump Administration implements its “plans for large-scale reductions in force”, over 200,000 probationary workers are expected to be laid off, and private companies are expected to benefit.
The senators requested that GAO’s investigation cover the duties of fired probationary workers, attempts to hire those workers back, data on how the terminations are impacting American’s health and safety, and more.
Merkley and Wyden signed the letter led the Senator Elizabeth Warren. A group of seven other Democratic senators signed on as well.
OREGON’S UNEMPLOYMENT RISES SLIGHTLY IN JANUARY
KQEN News Radio

Oregon’s unemployment rate was 4.4 percent in January, and 4.3 percent, as revised, in December, after rising gradually over the past year from 4.1 percent in January 2024.
A release from the Oregon Employment Department said the state’s 4.4 percent unemployment rate was the highest since September of 2021, when the rate was also 4.4 percent. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in December 2024 and 4.0 percent in January 2025.
State Employment Economist Gail Krumenauer said in January, Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment rose by 2,400 jobs, following a revised decline of 2,000 jobs in December. Krumenauer said January’s largest gains were 1,400 in professional and business services, 1,200 in leisure and hospitality, and 900 each in retail trade, and private educational services. The largest declines were 2,200 in manufacturing and 1,300 in health care and social assistance.
OED said during the past three years, health care and social assistance was by far the fastest growing sector of Oregon’s economy, adding 15,100 jobs or 5.2 percent, in the past through January. However, a large strike at a major health care provider contributed to the one-month drop of 1,300 jobs in this industry during January.
Krumenauer said industries that grew moderately during the most recent 12 month included:
- Other services by 2,100 jobs or 3.2 percent
- Private educational services by 1,100 jobs or 3.0 percent
- Professional and business services by 2,900 jobs or 1.1 percent
- Construction by 900 jobs or 0.8 percent
The release said manufacturing continued its decline of the past two years, cutting 6,900 jobs or 3.7 percent, while retail trade shed 2,300 jobs or 1.1 percent during that time.
ROCK CREEK HATCHERY PROPOSAL TOPIC OF PUBLIC MEETING
KQEN News Radio

The public is invited to learn about a proposal to maintain hatchery production in the Umpqua Basin by making investments at Rock Creek Hatchery and in the South Umpqua.
A release from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said the proposal is based on information gathered over the past year from the ODFW’s review of the state hatchery system, including Rock Creek Hatchery, as well as feedback from stakeholder groups, public conversations with local groups and consultation with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians.
Under this draft proposal, ODFW would:
- Invest some of the insurance funds from the Archie Creek Fire at Rock Creek Hatchery to maintain the existing spring Chinook program
- Partner with CCBUTI to invest remaining insurance funding and potentially, Federal Emergency Management Agency funding at a facility in the South Umpqua to rear the winter steelhead and coho programs
- The fall Chinook program would continue to be reared in the Gardiner-Reedsport STEP facility and Elk River Hatchery
ODFW is hosting the town hall Tuesday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to share the concept of this state-Tribal partnership and will be joined by CCBUTI to answer questions and take feedback. The meeting will be held in the Community Conference Hall building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
More information about the proposal and the meeting is available at: https://www.dfw.state.or.us/news/2025/02_Mar/030525.asp

Two people were injured in a single-vehicle motorcycle accident on Interstate 5 northbound, about two miles north of Canyonville on Sunday night.
An Oregon State Police report said shortly after 6:00 p.m. troopers and emergency medical personnel responded to the accident involving a three-wheeled motorcycle. Further information revealed that a male was operating the motorcycle with a female passenger. Both subjects had sustained significant facial injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
