Roseburg Area Morning News

FLOOD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK FOR PARTS OF SOUTHERN OREGON

KQEN News Radio

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Potential Outlook for rapid rises from rain and snow melting on rivers and streams in Douglas, Josephine, Jackson, Coos and Curry counties.

Forecasters said an active storm track will remain over the region through at least early next week. An upper trough and showery pattern are in place for Thursday with another frontal system moving into the area on Friday. This will be followed by a moist, atmospheric river system late Saturday into Sunday. Each of these systems is expected to bring snow and wind impacts to portions of the area. The fluctuating precipitation and snow levels means that some recently accumulated snow will be melted by the heavy rainfall causing an increased runoff.

Forecasters said river levels are expected to rise, especially for rivers and streams west of the Cascades, Sunday into Monday as heavy rain moves into western portions of the area. The most recent river forecast predicts flood stage to be reached by Saturday night on Deer Creek near Roseburg and by Sunday night on the Rogue River near Agness. Other rivers and streams will see large rises that could be dangerous to anyone near water.

A Flood Potential Outlook is issued when there is the potential for significant rises and flooding along rivers and streams.

The National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the Roseburg area is forecast to see nearly three inches of rain between Friday and Sunday, with two inches expected on Sunday alone.

The Roseburg Regional Airport recorded 0.87 inches of rain on Wednesday. The afternoon high temperature was 51 degrees.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY, WINTER STORM WATCH FOR MOUNTAINS

KQEN News Radio

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through Thursday night at 11:00 p.m. with a Winter Storm Watch in place from Thursday evening through Saturday morning in mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said additional snow accumulations between 5 to 15 inches with winds gusting as high as 50 miles per hour are expected on Thursday with the highest amounts near Crater Lake and Diamond Lake. For the Winter Storm Watch, heavy snow is possible with accumulations of between 12 and 24 inches.  Wind could gust as high as 45 miles per hour.

The Advisory and the Watch include the south central and southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to Crescent Lake, Diamond Lake, Crater Lake, Howard Prairie and the Siskiyou Summit as well as highways 140, 62, 230 and 138.

Forecasters said travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact commute times. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Drivers should slow down and use caution while traveling. Call 511 or visit www.tripcheck.com for road information.

VET CAFE COMING TO ROSEBURG: NEW GATHERING

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg Vet Café Coalition has announced the upcoming Vet Café.

The new initiative will take place on Friday March 29th at 11:00 a.m. in the Ford Conference Room of the Roseburg Public Library.

A release from organizers said the event will provide a safe and welcoming space for veterans to come together, build camaraderie, and strengthen connections within the community.

Vet Cafés are emerging across the country as the critical need for in-person connection is recognized in a world that has become increasingly digital, especially post-COVID. The gatherings offer an opportunity for veterans to engage in meaningful discussions, share experiences, and establish valuable connections – without the formal setting of a resource fair.

Roseburg VA Community Engagement & Partnership Coordinator William Wagner said, “This community-based coalition formed to help reduce the risks that isolation, loneliness, and detachment can often pose to mental health and overall wellness”. Wagner said organizers have been fortunate to secure a fantastic venue at the library, and the VA is thrilled to be able to be part of this endeavor.

The release said the Vet Café format is simple yet impactful: a safe forum, good food, and valuable connections. Veterans often miss the camaraderie and trust-building they experienced during their service, and Vet Café aims to restore that sense of belonging.

All veterans, families and community members interested in supporting local veterans are encouraged to attend.

SENATORS PUSH TO EXPAND SMITH RIVER RECREATION AREA

KQEN News Radio

This week Oregon’s Senator’s Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden introduced the Smith River National Recreation Area Expansion Act.

A joint release said it is legislation to expand the recreation area by 58,000 acres, including land in Oregon.

The senators believe the legislation is critical to protect the diverse ecosystems of the rivers, streams and adjacent lands of the North Fork Smith River watershed and help boost the local fishing and recreation industries that many Oregonians rely on. The legislation is also cosponsored by California’s U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff.

Merkley said, “When we come together to protect our state’s natural wonders, we can create jobs, protect resources, grow our economy and make sure future generations of Oregonians can enjoy our incredible public lands”.

Wyden said, “Expanding the Smith River National Recreation Area would protect one of our state’s most iconic treasures and generate both recreation jobs and economic benefits for Southern Oregon from visitors eager to fish, hunt, camp and hike in the area”.

In 1990, Congress enacted legislation to establish the Smith River National Recreation Area to protect the watershed, but the boundary of the NRA stopped at the Oregon border, leaving the North Fork of the Smith River and its tributaries unprotected.

The release said the NRA expansion would protect 74 miles of scenic rivers and permanently withdraw the land from new mining claims.

The legislation is supported by State Senator David Brock Smith, State Representative Court Boice and a diverse group of business, hunting and fishing, and outdoors related organizations.

A map of the proposed expansion can be found at: Smith River NRA 2023 proposed map
