Roseburg Area Morning News

CLEANUP OF ROCKSLIDE BEGINS WEDNESDAY

KQEN News Radio

Crews with Douglas County Public Works are beginning cleanup of a rockslide which took place Sunday night northwest of Roseburg.

County Lead Public Information Officer Tamara Howell said early Tuesday morning the department received a call reporting that more rock had fallen into the roadway near the 11000 block of Garden Valley Road. Howell said Public Works dispatched an operator to the site. He removed a few softball size rocks from the roadway and noted the slide continues to dribble small amounts of rocks but said very few are making it to the road.

Public Works has installed signs warning drivers to watch for falling rocks in this area. Motorists should note that road cleanup may impact drive time. Flaggers are controlling the work zone with that section of Garden Valley Road reduced to a single lane at times. Delays of up to 20 minutes should be expected.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS SLAM TIRE TAX AHEAD OF COMMITTEE HEARING

KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, Oregon House Republicans strongly condemned efforts by House Democrats to raise the cost of living for Oregonians with HB 3362.

A release from the House Republican Caucus said the Tire Tax would impose a 4 percent tax on tires sold in Oregon and send taxpayer funds towards rail transit, animal crossings and more. The GOP says none of the funds collected would go towards core functions of the Oregon Department of Transportation.

House Republican Leader Christine Drazan said, “Oregonians are frustrated by the rising cost of living and the Tire Tax will make it more expensive for families to drop their kids off at school, drive to work and pick up groceries”. Drazan said, “House Republicans want Oregonians to keep more of what they make and oppose new taxes that increase the cost of living”.

The release said minutes before the Joint Transportation Committee held a hearing on the proposal, written public testimony opposing the Tire Tax was at 88 percent, or 1,556 transmissions opposing the tax compared to 12 percent, or 212 submissions, in support.

Vice-Chair of the House Revenue Committee Representative E. Werner Reschke said, “The Tire Tax is a direct attack on working class and rural Oregonians who have to drive longer distances to get to work. Purchasing new tires is already expensive and can often be a budget buster for many Oregonians”. Reschke said, “Tires are an essential product for family transportation, and taxing them does nothing to make life more affordable for Oregonians”.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF RECURRING SCAM

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is again warning residents about a common scam that has resurfaced in the community.

Undersheriff Brad O’Dell said individuals are receiving fraudulent calls claiming they have missed jury duty and must immediately pay a $1,000 fine. O’Dell said the caller pressures victims to pay the fine through gift cards or cash apps.

A DCSO release said this is the same scam the Sheriff’s Office has warned about many times over the past several years. Scammers continue to exploit fear and urgency by using names of real officials to create a sense of legitimacy. O’Dell said it’s important to remember that legitimate law enforcement will never demand payment for fines via cash apps, gift cards, or other unconventional methods. Nor will law enforcement call residents advising them that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

O’Dell said, “This is not the first time we’ve seen this scam, and unfortunately, it continues to target members of our community. We want to remind residents that this tactic is fraudulent and ask that they share this warning with elderly friends and family members”.

O’Dell said retailers and cashiers can play a role in preventing these scams by posting signs at checkout stands and educating cashiers to recognize warning signs.

The release said residents are strongly encouraged to be cautious when receiving unsolicited calls demanding immediate payment for any alleged fines, especially those related to jury duty. O’Dell said those who receive such a call should not engage with the caller. Simply hang up and report the incident to law enforcement.

TOWN HALL MEETING ON FUTURE OF ROCK CREEK HATCHERY ON MARCH 11TH

KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners are encouraging residents to attend and participate in a town hall meeting regarding the future of the Rock Creek Fish Hatchery on Tuesday, March 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the Community Building of the fairgrounds.

A county government post said representatives from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, as well as the commissioners, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, State Senator David Brock Smith and State Representative Virgil Osborne will be available to discuss the future of the hatchery. The public will have an opportunity to comment.

Rock Creek Hatchery was originally constructed in 1925 and is one of the oldest continuously operating fish hatcheries in Oregon. It is the progeny of North Umpqua River hatchery operations, dating to before 1900. This location sits across the river from the first trout hatchery built in this section of the North Umpqua River in 1920.

For more information on the meeting, call 440-4201.
