WILDLIFE SAFARI INTRODUCES NEW GIRAFFE MUHIMU

One of Wildlife Safari’s primary giraffe trainers, Liv Nicks-Turnley said, “Muhimu is a wonderful addition to our giraffe tower here at Safari. He’s our youngest, but full of spirit and curiosity. The program will continue through Saturday August 23rd. That is 12 weeks and equates to 57 programs, hundreds of reading prizes, 290 craft kits every week, numerous outreach events, and extra summer volunteers and presenters.

Youth Service Librarian Aurora Ropp said, “All that fun needs scheduling, coordinating, purchasing, and pieces put together, which is both the most exciting and time-consuming portion of my work at the library”.

Keep up to date on the Summer Reading Program on the library’s website at: www.roseburgpubliclibrary.org. The events calendar includes program details, and the site has reading logs, book review slips, the prize list and the StoryWalk schedule.

The foundation of the Summer Reading Program is reading. At Roseburg Public Library, children and teens will have a log to keep track of the minutes read. A Roseburg Public Library card is not required to participate.

The program will have three grand prizes to give away this year – yearlong memberships to the YMCA of Douglas County. Ropp said, “In addition to reading logs, we will continue the super-popular book review raffle for prizes”.

MERKLEY, WYDEN, HOYLE PUSH FOR FEDERAL DISASTER DECLARATION

KQEN News Radio

Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, alongside U.S. Representative Val Hoyle are calling for swift approval of Governor Tina Kotek’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

A joint release said the push comes in response to devastating flood and other damaging weather-related events that severely impacted Coos, Curry, Douglas and Harney counties in March.

In a letter to President Donald Trump, the lawmakers said, “Given the extent of the damage to both physical and social infrastructure across four counties, we urge you and your administration to act swiftly to ensure that State and Local governments have all the federal resources they need to recover and rebuild”.

The wide-ranging weather triggered several incidents from the south coast to eastern Oregon between March 13th and 20th, as warm rains led to rapid snowmelt that contributed to severe runoff and erosion. Three rivers reached major flood levels, and wind gusts of over 45 miles per hour caused power outages and blocked roads.

The lawmakers stressed, “Local leaders, first responders, volunteers, and neighbors stepped up heroically to protect lives and begin recovery efforts across Coos, Curry, Douglas and Harney Counties. These are close-knit, self-reliant communities that have banded together to recover from these severe weather events and support one another.” The letter concluded, “We encourage your administration to deliver the tools needed to protect lives, restore order, and get families back on their feet”.

The letter from lawmakers also asked FEMA to provide support to eligible individuals and households in the four counties affected by the disaster from the Individual Assistance program.

The full text of the letter can be found here.

The Roseburg Receiver Updates

  • We now have 14,989 members!!! Thank you all so much for being here!
  • The Roseburg Receiver Live YouTube stream will transition to a single, continuous livestream starting June 1st.
Currently, a new live feed is created every 12 hours, which can be confusing for viewers. Our goal is to provide one consistent link for uninterrupted access. Since radio transmissions are already archived separately, recording each YouTube segment is unnecessary and creates redundant files.
