MOP-UP EFFORTS CONTINUE ON BARREL GROUND FIRE NORTHEAST OF YONCALLA
KQEN News Radio

Mop-up efforts continue on the Barrel Ground Fire, northeast of Yoncalla.

Miller said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
RITE AID COMMENCES CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY, STORES TO CLOSE
KQEN News Radio

One more Roseburg drug store may be closing.
Rite Aid Corporation has announced that the company and its subsidiaries have commenced voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.
A company release said Rite Aid will use this process to pursue a sale of its prescriptions, pharmacy and front-end inventory and other assets. While the outcome of this process is not yet known, the company is in active discussions with multiple potential buyers.
The release said any store operations or assets that are not sold through the process, will no longer be owned or operated by Rite Aid. This means that over the next few months, all Rite Aid distribution centers will close, and all stores will either close or be operated by a new owner.
During this process, Rite Aid customers can continue to access pharmacy services and products, including prescriptions and immunizations, both in store and online.
Rite Aid’s location on Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard in Roseburg has been open for decades. Originally it was a Payless Drug Store, until Rite Aid acquired the chain in 1996. Rite Aid closed the downtown Roseburg location on Southeast Stephens Street in June of 2023. That building remains vacant.
National media reports indicate that store closures are being implemented in waves, with some locations closing immediately or soon while others are expected to cease operations over the next several months.
News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN reached out to the local Rite Aid on Thursday, seeking an update on the location’s status. An employee said they couldn’t disclose any information.
PROCLAMATION FOR NATIONAL CORRECTIONAL OFFICER AND EMPLOYEE WEEK
KQEN News Radio

Douglas County Commissioners Tim Freeman, Tom Kress and Chris Boice issued a proclamation at their weekly business meeting on Wednesday, recognizing National Correctional Officer and Employee Appreciation Week, taking place through Saturday.
A county release said the proclamation recognizes the work and sacrifices that correctional officers and personnel do on a daily basis. It serves as a time to recognize the contributions of those who work in corrections, highlighting their dedication, professionalism and often challenging roles in maintaining safety and order within the nation’s correctional facilities.
Commissioner Boice read the proclamation and then Commissioner Kress presented certificates to Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, Undersheriff Brad O’Dell, Corrections Lieutenant Clayton Ruble, Transport Deputy Andrew Maldonado, Corporal Anthony McIrvin, RSAT Deputy Jessica Miller and Corrections Clerk Amy Felker. They also acknowledged the Reedsport Police Department staff and volunteers who assist with their Municipal Jail.
