HOYLE MAKE STATEMENT ON VOTING AGAINST GOVERNMENT FUNDING BILL

KQEN News Radio

Late Wednesday, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle voted “no” on a bill to reopen the federal government.

A release said the legislation failed to address what she called, “the impending Republican health care crisis”. Hoyle said the Continuing Resolution does not extend the Affordable Care Act Enhanced Premium Tax Credits, which are set to expire at the end of this year. Hoyle claims that when combined with the Republican budget bill, 50,000 Oregonians in her district are facing skyrocketing health care premiums or are at risk of losing their health care altogether.

After the vote, Hoyle released a statement which said, “My position on the CR has been clear: the price of my vote is what is in the best interest of my district and that means extending the ACA Enhanced Premium Tax Credits to ensure that health care is affordable and assessable”.

Hoyle concluded, “What happened today was wrong. However, I know I’m on the right side of history and will continue to fight for the people of the Central and South Coast of Oregon”.

SUTHERLIN POLICE ARREST STUDENT ALLEGEDLY WITH KNIFE AT HIGH SCHOOL

KQEN News Radio

Sutherlin Police arrested a juvenile student who was allegedly in possession of a knife at Sutherlin High School on Wednesday.

SPD Captain Kurt Sorensen said at 12:10 p.m. the school resource officer and other officers responded to the school, in the 500 block of East Fourth Avenue. Sorensen said school staff had already detained the student and had the knife secured.

After an investigation, the student was taken into custody and transported to the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center. They were charged with two counts of attempted second-degree assault, menacing, stalking, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact SPD at 459-2211.

CITY OF YONCALLA TO END CONTRACT WITH SHERIFF’S OFFICE

KQEN News Radio

The Yoncalla City Council has decided to end its contract for law enforcement services with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The decision was in a unanimous vote during a council meeting on Monday night. A resolution said the city no longer has sufficient unrestricted revenue to fund the current intergovernmental agreement. The resolution thanked DCSO for the decades of service that has been provided. The contract will end December 31st.

Interim City Administrator Dan Chandler said the cost for the contract this year was $140,000, with the fee next year rising to close to $190,000. Chandler said the five-year projection was right at a million dollars. The city is still working out what to do about enforcement of local violations, like nuisances. Chandler said there are a variety of options, including contracting with another city or doing code-enforcement in-house.

Yoncalla has a population of just over 1,000. It was incorporated as a city in 1901.

CHI MERCY HEALTH ADDS THIRD SURGICAL ROBOT TO ENHANCE SERVICE

KQEN News Radio

CHI Mercy Health has announced that they have added another robot to the Surgical Services options.

Mercy recently received a Davinci XI robot, which is now in service with two other robots on campus – another Davinci XI and a Mako.

A release said robotic surgery at Mercy is transforming patient care across a wide range of procedures including:

  • General Surgery: Hernia repairs, gallbladder removals, and other complex abdominal procedures
  • Gynecologic Surgery: Hysterectomies, ovarian cystectomies, and other intricate gynecologic interventions
  • Urology Surgery: Including a variety of procedures

The release said the integration of this third robot translates directly into tangible benefits for patients including:

  • Improved Service Timeframe and Accessibility: With an additional robot, more surgical appointments can be offered, reducing wait time for scheduled procedures, and ensuring timely access to crucial care.
  • Superior Patient Outcomes and Faster Recovery: Smaller incisions leads to less scarring and a more aesthetic result. There is also reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker and more complete healing.

Surgeon Dr. Alex Spencer said, “My patient outcomes and my ability to provide a high level of patient care are enhanced by the addition of this second XI to our surgical suite”.

The release said CHI Mercy Health continually strives to innovate and provide the highest standard of medical care. This latest robotic addition is a testament to that mission, offering patients access to world-class surgical expertise here in Douglas County.

AVIVA HEALTH TO HOST COMMUNITY IMPACT PANEL, INTRODUCE RESIDENTS

KQEN News Radio

Aviva Health is hosting its first-ever Community Impact Panel on Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the organization’s Willamette Conference Room, located on the second floor of its main Roseburg clinic at 150 Northeast Kenneth Ford Drive.

An Aviva release said panelists representing CHI Mercy Health Mercy Medical Center, Umpqua Community College, Adapt Integrated Health Care, Umpqua Health Alliance, and other organizations will discuss the current state of healthcare in Douglas County. That includes workforce development efforts, gaps that exist in the clinical care continuum and opportunities to make meaningful improvements at the local level.

Also on hand will be Aviva Health’s family medicine resident physicians and recently welcomed advanced practice provider residents. They are hopeful the panel discussion will help them cultivate topic ideas for their upcoming community capstone projects, a requirement of both the family medicine and APP resident programs.

The release said after the facilitated discussion, residents will have the opportunity to network with panelists and other community leaders in attendance.

A district release said it will be a fun family time of exploring literacy through play, featuring hands on stations, interactive storytelling and simple activities that families can replicate at home.

Director of Teaching and Learning Dr. Jill Weber said, “The reality is that 4 out of 5 Roseburg children starting kindergarten need intensive support to reach reading proficiency”.
