ROSEBURG AND SUTHERLIN OFFERING HALLOWEEN EVENTS

KQEN News Radio

The cities of Roseburg and Sutherlin are offering special events for Halloween on Friday night.

In Roseburg, the annual Neewollah Parade begins at 5:00 p.m. on Southeast Jackson Street, in downtown. The Neewollah – which is Halloween spelled backwards, event began in 1933 and is believed to be the longest running Neewollah parade in the United States. While costumed kids seek candy from downtown businesses, a group of Roseburg Area Dancing Witches will be performing on Jackson Street.

In Sutherlin, it’s the annual Trunk or Treat Halloween Festival, presented by Sutherlin Downtown Development. Central Avenue will be the center of the festivities with a haunted house, food trucks, vendors, a photo station and candy everywhere for everyone. The Oakland Flash Mob Witches will also be dancing in the street. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A number of assisted living facilities in the area are also offering kids the opportunity to trick or treat.

WYDEN APPLAUDS PASSAGE OF RESOLUTION TO END TRUMP’S GLOBAL TARIFFS

KQEN News Radio

On Thursday, Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Senator Ron Wyden applauded Senate passage of his bipartisan resolution to repeal President Donald Trump’s global tariffs and restore congressional authority over trade.

A release said Wyden led the resolution with Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.

The binding measure would terminate the emergency that President Trump declared to slap tariffs of up to 40 percent on products Americans buy from other countries. Wyden claims that in the wake of Trump’s tariff declaration, costs have increased, manufacturers have laid off thousands of workers and halted domestic investments, and foreign countries have sharply cut purchases of American agricultural experts.

The resolution, along with similar resolutions to repeal the tariffs on products Americans buy from Canada and Brazil, next heads to the House.

Wyden said, “For the third day in a row, bipartisan senators have made it clear that it’s time to put a stake in the heart of Donald Trump’s job-killing trade taxes”. Wyden said, “I’ll continue working with my colleagues to give Republicans opportunities to put their constituents ahead of blind loyalty to Donald Trump”.

The Veterans Day Parade will take place in downtown Roseburg on November 11th, starting at 11:00 a.m. It has been held in Roseburg every year since 1955. It has earned the title of “Oregon’s Greatest Veterans Day Parade”. This year’s theme is “1775-2025: 250 Years of Military Excellence”.

The parade will follow the traditional route through downtown Roseburg, starting at the corner of Northeast Fowler Street and Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard. Parade applications can be downloaded from the county website: https://www.douglascountyor.gov/507/Veterans-Day-Parade-Committee or picked up at the county’s Veterans Service Office at the courthouse. The parade application dedline is October 31st, for those who want their entry to be judged.

AVIVA HEALTH WELCOMES FIRST COHORT OF ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDER RESIDENTS

KQEN News Radio

Two new physician associates are joining the care team at Myrtle Creek Family Medicine, as participants in Aviva Health’s new Rural Oregon Advanced Practice Provider Residency Program.

An Aviva release said this will help expand access to primary care in south Douglas County.

Crystal Espinoza, PA-S and Vilca “Vika” Havili, PA-S will begin their work at Aviva on Monday, November 3rd, after completing the University of Utah School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program in St. George, Utah. They will begin seeing patients at the Myrtle Creek Clinic on December 1st. Aviva Health is currently accepting new patients to help build their schedules.

Aviva Health CEO KC Bolton said, “Our goal is pretty straightforward: give new providers the support they need to hit the ground running in rural health care.” Bolton said, “Crystal and Vika are eager to serve, and we’re glad they chose to start their careers here in Douglas County”.

The 13-month APP Residency Program provides newly graduated physician associates and family nurse practitioners with structured, hands-on training focused on conditions commonly seen in rural primary care. Residents receive mentorship from experienced clinicians and participate in specialty rotations including pediatrics, behavioral health, women’s health, and dermatology, along with dedicated time for classroom learning and clinical skills development.

The program also advances workforce development efforts that support Aviva Health’s mission to recruit, train, and retain primary care providers in Douglas County, building on the success of the Roseburg Family Medicine Residency Program launched in 2020.

Bolton said, “We’re not just building strong clinicians. We’re giving them a chance to put down roots and become part of the community, and that’s how you build lasting access to care”.

Patients interested in scheduling an appointment with Espinoza or Havili at Myrtle Creek Family Medicine Clinic can call 860-4070.
