February 13, 2025

SUTHERLIN, Ore. — Two Sutherlin police officers sustained minor injuries after being bitten by a suspect’s dog during an arrest on February 12, according to the Sutherlin Police Department (SPD). The incident occurred after officers responded to a report of illegal camping in the area of Southside Road and Forest Heights.
At approximately 6 p.m., officers arrived at the scene and contacted Jason Ray Nightingale, 51, who was found to have outstanding warrants. As officers attempted to arrest him, Nightingale allegedly became physically combative, leading to a struggle. During the altercation, Nightingale reportedly tried to take an officer’s stun gun, and his dog began biting the officers, SPD officials said.
In an effort to stop the dog, an officer fired two shots at the animal, but the dog fled the scene uninjured and has not been located. Officers were eventually able to subdue Nightingale, who was arrested and transported to the Douglas County Jail.
Nightingale faces multiple charges, including:
- Assaulting public safety officers
- Unlawful use of a weapon
- Escape
- Harassment
- Outstanding warrants
The two injured officers were treated and released from Mercy Medical Center for minor dog bite injuries.
As of February 13, 2025, Nightingale remains in custody at the Douglas County Jail.
The Sutherlin Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident and has urged anyone with information about the whereabouts of the dog to come forward.
