Roseburg Family Displaced After Stove Fire Damages Home, Claims Lives of Pets

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A family of five, including two adults and three children, has been displaced after a residential fire broke out in their W. Princeton Avenue home on Thursday afternoon, February 6. The Roseburg Fire Department (RFD) responded to the scene after reports of smoke inside the residence, discovering a smoldering stove fire that had been extinguished but left significant damage in its wake.

Upon arrival, firefighters found no visible signs of fire from the exterior of the multi-family apartment complex. However, upon further investigation, they encountered heavy heat and smoke inside one of the units. The fire, which originated in the kitchen, had been extinguished prior to their arrival but caused extensive structural, smoke, and water damage to the single-family residence.

The occupant of the home had returned from work to find the residence filled with smoke and the stove smoldering. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported among the residents. Tragically, a family dog and cat did not survive the incident.

Seven firefighters worked to ensure the fire had not spread to other parts of the building, with assistance from the Roseburg Police Department and the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is providing aid to the displaced family as they navigate the aftermath of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with a fire investigator having responded to the scene. The Roseburg Fire Department took the opportunity to remind the community of the importance of fire safety measures, including working smoke alarms and home fire sprinkler systems.

"Working smoke alarms are critical to early fire detection and can save lives," RFD stated in a release. "Ensure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom. Additionally, consider installing a home fire sprinkler system for added protection."
