Police responded to reports of gunfire in a Sutherlin neighborhood Monday afternoon. Officers later found an elderly woman deceased inside a residence. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
SUTHERLIN, Ore. — An investigation is underway after law enforcement responding to a gunfire report in Sutherlin discovered a deceased woman inside a residence Monday afternoon.
Police say calls came in shortly before 4 p.m. reporting gunshots in a residential area near East Third Avenue. While checking the area, officers learned a bullet had penetrated the rear of a nearby home, narrowly missing someone inside.
The source of the gunfire was later linked to a neighboring residence on East Second Avenue. Authorities established a safety perimeter and issued a reverse 911 alert to nearby residents while the situation was assessed.
After repeated attempts to make contact went unanswered, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office assisted with entry into the home. Inside, responders located an elderly woman who had died from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A dog was also found deceased at the scene.
The woman’s identity has not been released as next-of-kin notifications are pending. Officials say there is no danger to the public, and the incident remains under investigation.
