Prescribed Burn Scheduled at Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area June 30 – July 1
BLM fire officials plan a prescribed burn at Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, June 30–July 1, covering 100 acres to improve elk habitat, reduce fuels, and urging caution for Highway 38 motorists due to possible smoke and short delays.

Fire officials with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have announced plans for a prescribed burn at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area on June 30 and July 1, 2025.
The prescribed burn will cover approximately 100 acres of grassland, aimed at improving forage and habitat for the area's popular herd of Roosevelt elk, currently numbering between 80 and 100. Additionally, the operation will reduce hazardous fuels in grasslands adjacent to Highway 38.
Officials noted that the burn dates could be adjusted based on weather conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Motorists traveling on Highway 38 between mile markers three and six may experience short delays due to the controlled burn. BLM urges travelers to drive cautiously, particularly during periods of reduced visibility caused by smoke. Traffic controllers will be onsite to manage the flow of vehicles and enhance driver safety. The main viewing area, kiosk, and restrooms at Dean Creek will remain open to visitors throughout the operation.
To minimize smoke impacts in local communities, BLM fire officials have coordinated closely with the Oregon Department of Forestry’s smoke management program. Nonetheless, smoke from the prescribed burn might still be visible from Reedsport and nearby areas.
Contractors, along with personnel from the Coos Forest Protective Association and the U.S. Forest Service, will assist BLM officials in carrying out the burn.
