ROSEBURG, Ore. — Roseburg Parks and Recreation will launch the Discover Roseburg 15 Land of Umpqua Geocache Series with a public kickoff event on Saturday, Feb. 7.
The free, family friendly event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Roseburg Public Library. Parks staff will provide instructions and distribute passports containing GPS coordinates used for the geocaching challenge. The event will take place regardless of weather conditions.
According to Roseburg Parks and Recreation Coordinator Tracy David, geocaching allows participants to engage in an activity that can be done locally or while traveling, using GPS technology to locate hidden containers.
Geocaching began in Oregon in 2000, when the first documented GPS located cache was placed near Beavercreek. Roseburg Parks and Recreation has sponsored the Discover Roseburg geocache series for 15 years.
Participants will need a smartphone or GPS enabled device to follow printed coordinates and locate geocaches placed around the city. The challenge includes five physical geocaches and 15 virtual geocaches at designated locations. Participants are encouraged to download a geocaching app and bring a pen or pencil to sign physical cache logs.
An “Ask the Expert” table will be available during the kickoff, staffed by Mike Baker, who originally proposed bringing a geocaching event to Roseburg. Baker will assist participants with app setup and GPS use.
Those who complete all 20 geocaches may redeem their passports for a limited edition trackable geocoin. A total of 200 geocoins are available. Passports do not need to be completed on the day of the kickoff and may be finished over time until all coins are claimed.
After the kickoff, passports can be picked up or returned at Roseburg City Hall, 900 SE Douglas Ave., during regular weekday business hours. After hours pickup and drop off is available at the Hampton Inn and Suites, 1620 NW Mulholland Drive.
For additional information, participants may contact Roseburg Parks and Recreation at 541-492-6899 or tdavid@roseburgor.gov.
