A Community Tradition at Risk: Help Save Winston's 4th of July Fireworks

WAID's 5th-year 4th of July fireworks tradition may not happen this year. With $25,000 still needed and little support so far, the event is at risk of being canceled. Community donations and volunteers are urgently needed to keep this celebration alive. Let’s not lose the 5th before it begins.

A Community Tradition at Risk: Help Save Winston's 4th of July Fireworks

For 5 years, the skies above Winston and Dillard have lit up every Independence Day with the crackle and glow of fireworks that has been hosted by the Winston Area Independence Day (WAID) - a celebration of freedom, family, and small-town pride. This year, that beloved tradition is at risk of fading into memory.

The Winston Area Independence Day (WAID) celebration, marking its 50th anniversary, is facing an urgent crisis. The cost to host the fireworks display is $27,500, and as of now, the event organizers are far from reaching that goal. One dedicated community member has carried the weight of organizing this event for years—collecting cans, running auctions, and asking for business support—all to ensure the celebration continues. But the burden has become too heavy to carry alone.

Without immediate financial support and new volunteers, the WAID nonprofit may dissolve, bringing the annual 4th of July event - and the fireworks show that generations have grown up with - to an end.

“It breaks my heart, but my back is breaking over the daily strain to make this all happen for the community,” wrote the organizer in a recent public message. The call is clear: it’s time for the community to come together and carry the torch.

How You Can Help:

If 250 businesses contributed just $100, WAID would nearly meet its fundraising goal. But the responsibility doesn’t lie with businesses alone. If residents and families contribute as well, every donation - no matter how small - brings the event closer to being saved. Whether it's $20, $100, or $200, every contribution makes a difference.

This isn’t just about fireworks. It’s about preserving a moment that brings the community together - neighbors laughing, kids playing with glowsticks, families watching the sky sparkle with color. It’s about showing pride and support for a town that means so much to so many.

Community members are encouraged to consider how they, their families, or their businesses can help. Share this article, talk to the community, and rally support around this important piece of Winston and Dillard’s hometown identity.

Let’s not let the 5th year be the last. Let’s light up the sky together - like this community always has.
