Bicyclist Killed in Early Morning Collision on I-5 Near Sutherlin

A California man was killed early Thursday when his bicycle was struck by a pickup on I-5 near Sutherlin. The crash closed the highway for about four hours. The driver had minor injuries, while a passenger was hospitalized with minor injuries, according to Oregon State Police.

SUTHERLIN, Ore. — A California man lost his life early Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on Interstate 5 near Sutherlin.

According to the Oregon State Police, the crash occurred just before 2:30 a.m. on July 31 near milepost 133. Authorities say a black Toyota Tundra, driven by a 66-year-old man from Roseburg, was heading south when it struck 42-year-old Justin Jay Little of Cypress, California. For reasons that remain unclear, Little was riding his bicycle in the fast lane at the time of the collision.

Justin Jay Little was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries that did not require hospital transport. A passenger in the vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The crash investigation and response closed a portion of Interstate 5 for approximately four hours. Multiple agencies, including Central Douglas Fire and Rescue, Sutherlin Fire Department, Sutherlin Police, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Medical Examiner, and the Oregon Department of Transportation, assisted at the scene.
