Community Support Needed: Lookingglass Rural Fire District Seeks Grant for Lifesaving Cardiac Monitor

LOOKINGGLASS, Ore. — The Lookingglass Rural Fire District (LRFD) is asking for community support as it pursues funding for a critical piece of medical equipment that could improve emergency care and save lives.

LRFD is applying for a $15,000 Good Neighbor Grant through the Ford Family Foundation. If approved, this grant will combine with a $10,000 award already secured, giving the district enough funds to purchase a Zoll X-Series Cardiac Monitor.

Why the Zoll Monitor Matters

Currently, LRFD relies on older automated external defibrillators (AEDs), specifically the LifePak 500 and CR-Plus. While functional, these devices require costly pad and battery replacements after every use. Just as concerning, the pads are not compatible with the Zoll monitors used by local ambulance crews, leading to wasted time and supplies during critical patient transfers.

The Zoll monitor would address these issues directly. It allows responders to seamlessly continue patient care when handing off to ambulance crews, reducing delays and costs. Beyond defibrillation, the unit provides advanced tools such as:

  • Automatic blood pressure monitoring
  • Pulse oximetry (oxygen saturation)
  • 12-lead EKGs for early detection of heart attacks

With call volumes climbing, from 238 incidents in 2024 to a projected 300+ in 2025, and with volunteer numbers declining nationwide, the Zoll monitor would free up personnel while giving patients the best chance at survival.

How the Community Can Help

LRFD is asking residents to show their support by writing letters of support to include with the grant application. These letters help demonstrate to the Ford Family Foundation that the project has strong local backing and will directly benefit the community in emergencies.

Anyone willing to write a letter can reach out to the district at captain@lookingglassfire.org for guidance or examples.
