Coos Bay Driver Pleads Guilty in UCC Softball Bus Crash

COQUILLE, Ore. — Jonathan Dowdy, a Coos Bay resident, pleaded guilty Monday to charges stemming from the April collision involving a bus carrying members of the Umpqua Community College softball team. The crash resulted in the deaths of head coach Jami Strinz and 19-year-old player Kiley Jones and injured eight additional players.

Dowdy admitted to two counts of second-degree manslaughter, three counts of third-degree assault while driving under the influence, five counts of third-degree assault, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and driving while suspended or revoked. Prosecutors dismissed other counts, including Measure 11 second-degree assault, as part of a plea agreement. He originally faced 25 charges.

Dowdy was also injured in the crash and was hospitalized before being taken into custody. He had a separate DUII case pending from January at the time of the incident. Sentencing in both cases is scheduled for Sept. 11.
