Fatal Crash on Elkhead Road Near Drain Under Investigation

Douglas County deputies are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash on Elkhead Road near Drain early Jan. 14. An 89-year-old driver passed away at the scene. A 72-year-old driver was injured and taken to Mercy Medical Center. No intoxicants suspected.

DRAIN, Ore. — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that happened early the morning of January 14, 2026, on Elkhead Road.

Investigators said a 2001 Toyota RAV4, driven by Donald Lawrence Brown, 89, of Drain, was traveling westbound when it drifted into the eastbound lane for unknown reasons. The Toyota then collided with a 2025 Mazda four-door sedan driven by Patricia Hail Haley, 72, also of Drain, who was traveling eastbound.

The Sheriff’s Office said Brown was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Haley was injured and taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center for treatment.

Deputies said there were no initial signs that intoxicants were a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
