ROSEBURG WITH HEAVY RAINFALL IN MARCH BUT DATA INCOMPLETE

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg had heavy rainfall in March, but data is incomplete due to gauges at the Roseburg Regional Airport that haven’t been working for nearly two weeks.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the airport measured 7.29 inches of rain between March 1st and March 18th, when equipment that measures weather data quit operating. That happened right after the region’s historic flood event on March 16th. The normal rainfall at the airport for March is 3.47 inches.

Roseburg’s record rainfall for the month of March is 8.65 inches, measured in 2012. With 13 days of missing data, it’s quite likely that last month eclipsed that record.

The month was slightly cooler than normal, at least the portion that could be measured. Roseburg’s high temperature averaged 57.5 degrees through March 18th. The normal high for the month is 58.7 degrees.

Forecasters said the gauges at the airport should be recalibrated later this week, allowing accurate weather data to again be measured.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY THROUGH 5:00 P.M. TUESDAY

KQEN News Radio

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said moderate to heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations between 8 and 24 inches are expected. Winds will be gusting as high as 40 miles per hour.

The Advisory area includes the southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to highways 230 and 138 near Diamond Lake, Highway 62 south of Crater Lake and Highway 140.

Forecasters said travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact commute times.

Drivers should slow down and use caution while traveling. Call 511 or visit www.tripcheck.com for road information.

ANNUAL HYDRANT FLUSHING UNDERWAY IN ROSEBURG

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg Fire Department is flushing fire hydrants inside the city limits now through June 30th.

Hydrant flushing will be conducted from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.

A city release said RFD realizes that hydrant flushing may cause some inconvenience; however, the flushing program is necessary to ensure proper functioning and delivery of adequate water from the water mains when it is needed for fire control. The community’s cooperation with this hydrant flushing is appreciated.

During the flushing process, customers may experience low water pressure or discolored water. While the water is safe to drink, customers may prefer to wait until it runs clear before drinking or washing clothes and dishes.

CONVERSATIONS ON ATTACHMENT HAPPENING APRIL 10TH AT UVA

KQEN News Radio

Umpqua Valley Arts presents “Conversations on Attachment” on Thursday April 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The evening is a special exhibitions event in conjunction with the current exhibit “Midwife a Life”. Exhibiting artist Victoria Smits and researcher and licensed therapist Dr. Kelley Munger will come together to discuss attachment theory, the ability of attachment styles to change over time, and how attachment intersects with others in relationships.

A UVA release said attachment styles emerge from how people experience early caregiving and in turn, affect their engagement with others and is the area of investigation, theory, and research behind the exhibit, currently on display in the Hallie Brown Ford Gallery. The evening will include a chance to see the work, experience the panel discussion, with time for questions and conversations to follow.

This event will be open house style, free to attend with no pre-registration required. Community members are invited to attend the event for a chance to experience the work in a different way.

Umpqua Valley Arts is on West Harvard Avenue in Roseburg, just west of Fir Grove Elementary School. For more information on the exhibit, go to: https://uvarts.com/current-exhibits/

SENATORS RELEASE BILL THEY SAY WILL PROTECT AMERICANS

KQEN News Radio

On Monday, Senator Ron Wyden and Massachusetts Senator Edward Markey released legislation they claim will protect Americans against Elon Musk, DOGE and other officials accessing stores of personal data held by the government.

A release from Wyden’s office said that it includes social security numbers, medical history, financial data and other sensitive information. Wyden said the Privacy Modernization Act would make it easier to sue officials for violations and would increase the penalties for such violations.

The legislation is co-sponsored by Senator Jeff Merkley and Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen.

Wyden said, “The seizure of millions of Americans’ sensitive information by Trump, Musk and other MAGA goons is plainly illegal, but current remedies are to slow and need more teeth”. Wyden said, “Our bill defends against new threats to American’s privacy and the integrity of federal systems, and ensures individuals can go after the government when officials break the law, including quickly stopping their illegal actions with a court order”.

Merkley said, “Elon Musk and his minions have no business riffling through your personal data”. Merkley said, “Our bill protects millions of Americans who count on the federal government to safeguard personal information included on taxes, student loans, and disaster assistance”.

The lawmakers say the new legislation is an update of the Privacy Act, which was passed by Congress over 50 years ago.

A one page summary of the legislation can be found here.
