ROSEBURG HAD SECOND DAY WITH HIGH AROUND 10 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL
KQEN News Radio

Roseburg had a second day in a row with a high temperature around ten degrees above normal.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said the mercury reached 73 degrees on Thursday afternoon at the Roseburg Regional Airport. The normal high temperature for April 10th is 62 degrees. The record high for the date is 83 degrees set in 2004.
After a cooler weekend with highs near the seasonal norms, forecasters say warmer weather is ahead for the Umpqua Valley next week.
OREGON REPUBLICAN PARTY CHAIR QUIETLY RESIGNS FOLLOWING ALLEGATIONS
KQEN News Radio

A former Douglas County resident and the chair of the Oregon Republican Party has quietly resigned following allegations of sexual violence against his ex-wife that were first reported by the Oregon Journalism Project Earlier this week: https://www.wweek.com/news/2025/04/08/the-oregon-gops-new-chairman-brings-some-baggage-to-his-role/
A GOP release issued on Wednesday from former chair Jerry Cummings referenced a Tuesday publication from Nigel Jaquis of Willamette Week which talked about the charges against the Columbia County insurance agent and minister. Cummings said, “Beginning sixteen years ago this fall, my first wife and I went through a messy and painful divorce. I’ve been on record defending against these things for a decade and a half. My children are now young adults. And beginning the cycle of he said/she said with their mother is not something I want to put then through in public forums”. Cummings, who was elected the state party GOP Chair in February, said his desire to unite the party and focus on winning elections is being hampered by these allegations and would be a distraction to the work of the party.
Cummings said, “I can’t honestly say that stepping down as chairman will be what is best for the party as it may embolden enemies from within and without to keep doing this to us”. However, Cummings said his position as chairman is not more important that his position as a dad, so stepping down to protect his children is not a hard call.
Oregon GOP vice chair Connie Whelchel is replacing Cummings as chair effective immediately.
According to this week’s Oregon Journalism Project report, Cummings has also been accused in recent lawsuits of failing to make payments on bank loans totaling $93,000 and withdrawing $17,000 from a separate bank account that didn’t have that amount of money available.
Cummings lived in Douglas County in the early 2000s, pastoring at an area church and working at a Christian media outlet.
COMMISSIONERS ISSUE PROCLAMATION FOR CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, Douglas County Commissioners Tim Freeman, Tom Kress and Chris Boice issued a proclamation in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month during their weekly business meeting.
A county release said the proclamation acknowledges that child abuse and neglect are serious issues impacting every part of the county. It highlights that effective prevention methods are only possible through strong partnerships and collaboration among local health and social service agencies, law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, public and private schools, the medical community, civic and faith-based organizations, the business community and local families.
Commissioner Boice read the official proclamation followed by Commissioner Kress who recognized 12 local agencies with proclamation certificates, honoring their dedication to the children and families of the county.

KQEN News Radio

Families are invited to begin enrolling their children in the Roseburg School District for the 2025-26 school year, starting April 14th.
Online enrollment is required for all new, returning and re-enrolling students. A comprehensive guide to the process, including necessary documents and parent portal links is available on the districts website at: https://www.roseburg.k12.or.us/families/enrollmentandregistration/onlineenrollmentandregistration
A district release said Roseburg schools are dedicated to building a strong foundation in reading, writing, and math while nurturing life skills such as self-management and responsibility. College and career readiness is woven into learning experiences and coursework from kindergarten through graduation, empowering students to explore their interests and thrive.
Superintendent Jared Cordon said, “Our schools provide engaging, high-quality learning experiences for all students”. Cordon said, “We strive to make our district a place where all students feel valued, supported and inspired. Our commitment is to recognize each student as an individual with unique strengths and needs.” Cordon said, “By providing personalized support and a wide range of opportunities, we help every learner find their pathway to a successful future”.
All elementary schools will hold Kindergarten Roundup events from 3:00 p.m. to 4;30 p.m. on May 28th. These events give incoming kindergartners and their families the chance to visit and learn about their school and meet staff.
Families living outside the district boundaries who wish to attend Roseburg schools are welcome to complete a transfer request through the Douglas Education Service District.
Families with questions about the online enrollment process and those unable to attend

NORTH CREEK TRAIL TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS
KQEN News Radio

The North Creek Trail at South Slough Reserve near Charleston is temporarily closed to public access until further notice.
Public Involvement Coordinator Deborah Rudd said the closure is necessary following the fall of a large tree between bridges 7 and 8, which severally damaged the trail, uprooting dirt and creating an impassable section.
Rudd said efforts are underway to restore safe access to the trail as quickly as possible. The Oregon Department of State Lands has enacted this closure as a precaution to ensure public safety. The trail will reopen once all repair work is complete.
Rudd said meanwhile, visitors are welcome to explore other South Slough Reserve trails, which remain open daily from dawn to dusk.
