Roseburg Area Morning News

ROSEBURG HAD THE SECOND WARMEST DAY OF 2025 ON TUESDAY

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg had the second warmest day of 2025 on Tuesday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 80 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. Monday was the hottest day of 2025 to this point, with a high of 84 degrees.

The high Tuesday was not a record for the date. April 15th’s record high is 90 degrees, set in 1947.

Forecasters said the Umpqua Valley will see the high temperature dropping by nearly 10 degrees Wednesday, with a high of 71 degrees expected. That is still well above the normal highs for this week in April which are in the range of 62 to 64 degrees.

Sunny dry conditions are forecast for the foreseeable future.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS FORCE VOTE TO CUT TAXES FOR MANY OREGONIANS

KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, Oregon House Republicans say they forced a vote on the House floor for legislation that would lower taxes for the most-burdened Oregonians, including middle class income tax cuts and “No Tax on Tips”. A House GOP release said the GOP also forced a vote on the repeal of Oregon’s Corporate Activity Tax.

House Republican Leader Christine Drazan said, “Today we pursued tax relief that empowers families to keep more of what they earn”. Drazan said, “Despite these missed opportunities, House Republicans remain committed to making Oregon more affordable and will continue to use every tool to lower the cost of living and improve the quality of life in our beautiful state”.

Legislation to cut taxes and address the cost of living for working Oregonians include:

  • HB 3753 – Income Tax Cut
  • HB 3914 – No Tax on Tips
  • HB 2033 – Repeal Oregon’s Hidden Sales Tax, the CAT.

The motion on all three measures ultimately failed.

Representative Boomer Wright of Reedsport said, “We can’t tax our businesses into prosperity”. Wright was the chief sponsor of HB 2034. He said, “Repealing the CAT Tax would eliminate Oregon’s hidden sales tax on businesses and consumers, which would incentivize job growth and get rising costs under control. Oregonians have been taxed enough and today we missed a huge opportunity to ease the tax burden. Its time to neuter the CAT”.

SUBWAY ON NORTHWEST STEWART PARKWAY HAS REOPENED WITH NEW FRANCHISEE

KQEN News Radio

The Subway sandwich shop on Northwest Stewart Parkway in Roseburg has re-opened.

After being closed late last year, the store has a new franchisee. Utahsubs also operates Subway stores in Myrtle Creek and Canyonville. Sharnjit Mahil told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that this Subway location is one of the few in the area that has a drive through.

Mahil said the business is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. 10 to 12 employees are working at the location.

Subway is one of the largest fast-food chains in the country, with over 20,000 locations as of early this year.

WYDEN ANNOUNCES TOWN HALLS IN DOUGLAS AND SEVERAL OTHER COUNTIES

KQEN News Radio

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden has announced he will hold town halls next week in Douglas and several other Oregon counties.

Heading into these seven open-to-all town halls between April 23rd and April 26th, Wyden has held 1,110 town halls in keeping with his promise to have at least one town hall each year in each of Oregon’s 36 counties.

Wyden said, “I promised Oregonians in every nook and cranny of our state that I would always make myself available to answer questions and hear their concerns and opinions”. Wyden said, “That in-person connection has always been essential, and it’s more crucial than ever now during these unprecedented challenges to continue those direct conversations so all parts of Oregon are heard”.

Wyden will have town halls on:

  • Wednesday April 23rd in Wasco, and Umatilla counties
  • Thursday April 24th in Grant and Harney counties
  • Friday April 25th in Lake and Klamath counties
  • Saturday April 26th in Douglas County. That event will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Jacoby Auditorium of Umpqua Community College.

Wyden’s release said although these were the largest venues available for these town halls on these dates, space may still be limited. Doors will open one hour before the town hall start time for attendees. For everyone’s security, backpacks and large bags will not be allowed in the town halls.

BURN PERMITS ISSUED IN ROSEBURG THROUGH MAY 15TH

KQEN News Radio

The City of Roseburg Fire Department is issuing residential burn permits through May 15th.

A city release said these permits are issued for seven days at a cost of $75. Residential yard waste is the only material that may be burned. Prohibited items include standing berry vines, paper, wood, plastics, tires, standing grass, weeds, construction material, and material from lot clearing. Burning may not be done on vacant lots or on someone else’s property. Fires must be monitored by a competent adult and extinguished prior to darkness. Tools to control or extinguish the fire must be on-site whenever there is material burning.

Burn barrels are never allowed inside the city limits. Anyone burning trash or burning without a permit may be subject to a fine, and/or legal action. Additionally, due diligence must be exercised while burning, even with a permit, as fire can quickly get out of control and the person responsible for the fire may be subject to fines, legal action, or restitution.

If possible, residents are urged to utilize alternatives to burning, such as composting, chipping, mulching, or transporting debris to the Douglas County landfill.

To request a burn permit in the City of Roseburg, call 492-6770 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. A burn permit request form is also available at: www.cityofroseburg.org/departments/fire/burn-permits.

OREGON DELEGATION URGES FISHERY DISASTER DECLARATION

KQEN News Radio

U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley along with his Democratic colleagues in the Oregon delegation – Senator Ron Wyden, and U.S. Representatives Val Hoyle. Suzanne Bonamici, Andrea Salinas, Maxine Dexter and Janelle Bynum – in urging the U.S. Department of Commerce to declare a federal fishery resource disaster for the 2024 Oregon troll salmon fishery.

A letter from the lawmakers said, “This declaration is critical to provide economic relief to Oregon’s fisheries and coastal communities in addition to protecting the sustainability of wild salmon populations”.

A joint release said in 2024, Oregon’s troll salmon fishery struggled amid the worsening effect of climate change, increased drought, shifting ocean conditions, and other impacts leading to poor salmon returns. Facing these significant challenges, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, estimates that 2024 Chinook salmon populations levels were below forecasts, with 2025 Chinook salmon populations likely “not high enough to allow for target Chinook fisheries”.

The impact salmon loss has on Oregon’s economy is large, as the state’s commercial fishing industry generates more than $640 million in economic activity each year, equivalent to 9,200 jobs.

The lawmakers letter continued, “Despite best efforts from our local fishermen and state and local partners, the economic consequences of this crisis threaten both salmon fishermen and the broader economy of Oregon’s coastal communities which reply on the fishery”.

As the Pacific Fisheries Management Council undergoes the process to finalize its 2025 salmon season management recommendations, the Oregon delegation is pushing for U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to quickly grant Governor Tina Kotek’s for a federal fishery disaster under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The release said the action is critical to access federal funding need to ease the economic uncertainty for Oregon’s commercial troll salmon fishery, while recognizing the immense role salmon hold in the cultural heritage of Pacific Northwest Tribes, recreation and as a treasured natural resource across the state.
