HOUSE GOP LEADER SUPPORTS REPEAL OF WILDFIRE HAZARD MAPS
KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, Oregon House Republican Leader Christine Drazan released a statement in response to Senate Bill 83, which makes changes to building code standards for a wildfire mitigation that House Republicans proposed in House Bill 3944.
A release from Drazan said a public hearing on the Senate bill was held on Tuesday.
Drazan said, “Oregonians desperately need relief from the wildfire hazard maps that have created chaos and fear across rural Oregon. This bill closely mirrors legislation that House Republicans have introduced that will fully repeal the disastrous wildfire hazard map and all costly mandates”. Drazan said, “This legislation provides needed relief to rural homeowners that have paid the price of costly mandates, and we appreciate the members of this committee that have chosen to stand with us, rise above partisanship and make this right”.
CRATER LAKE TO CLOSE POPULAR TRAIL/LAKE SHORE ACCESS FOR THREE YEARS
KQEN News Radio

In a move that will impact tourism at one of Oregon’s most popular landmarks. Crater Lake National Park will close the Cleetwood Cove Trail starting in 2026, for an extensive construction project which is expected to take three years.
That means this summer will be the last opportunity for visitors to swim or take a boat tour at Crater Lake for quite some time.
Information from the National Parks Service said the trail is the most heavily used trail in the park, and the only permitted access to the shore of Crater Lake. Every year, thousands of park visitors hike the trail to get to the lakeshore. The Cleetwood Cove Marina is the launch point for the concession-provided boat tours of Crater Lake and the park’s boats. A giant project will rehabilitate the trail and related infrastructure to ensure safe access to the lake, provide visitor services, and protect the lake.
Work will include:
- Rehabilitation of the entire 1.1-mile trail including improvements to trail tread and retaining walls
- Rockfall scaling and mitigation along identified high risk zones
- Removal and replacement of the failed bullhead/dock with a structurally stable marina
- Replacing the outdated and undersized composting toilets located near the marina
Due to the extent of the work to be completed and short construction seasons, trail closures will be required and are expected during the duration of the 2027 and 2028 summer seasons. During this time, no boat tours will be provided, and the trail will be closed due to construction and rockfall hazards. If construction goes as planned, the renovated trail will reopen in the summer of 2029.
At 1,943 feet, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. It is located approximately two hours southeast of Roseburg. The national park borders the Umpqua National Forest.
DOUGLAS COUNTY EMPLOYERS ADD 20 JOBS IN FEBRUARY
KQEN News Radio

Douglas County’s seasonally adjusted payroll employment increased by 20 jobs in February after gains of 10 in January and 130 in December.
A State of Oregon Employment Department release said in the not seasonally adjusted private-sector industries in February, there were relatively large gains of 70 jobs in leisure and hospitality and 40 jobs in construction. There was a relatively large loss of 30 jobs in retail trade.
Regional Economist Brian Rooney said government added 80 jobs in February, due to gains of 70 jobs in local education and 20 jobs in noneducation local government. Rooney said these gains were countered by a loss of 10 in the federal government category.
OED said when comparing February 2025 with February 2024, total nonfarm employment decreased by 70 jobs or 0.2 percent. Private-sector over-the-year gains of 50 jobs were seen in private education and health services. That was followed by gains of 40 each in transportation, warehousing and utilities, and leisure and hospitality. There were relatively large losses of 170 in retail trade, of 110 in professional and business services, and of 60 in mining and logging.
Rooney said government added 210 jobs over-the-year from gains of 90 in noneducation local government, 80 in local education, 30 in Indian tribal, and 10 in the federal government category.
Douglas County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate edged up to 5.4 percent in February compared with a revised 5.2 percent in January. The rate is up from 5.1 percent in February 2024. The Oregon seasonally adjusted February rate was 4.5 percent while the U.S. rate is 4.1 percent.

CRUNCH TIME FOR GETTING DEL TACO OPEN
KQEN News Radio

Its “crunch time” for getting Roseburg’s new Del Taco store open.
That is the word from Del Taco/Cactus Enterprises Director of Operations Erick Marsh.
Marsh told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that construction on the building on Northwest Stewart Parkway is coming along nicely. Marsh said there have been some delays with the project, mostly due to the weather, but it has made great progress in just the last few weeks. Marsh said the furniture package should be arriving later this week. He hopes that Del Taco will be open by the middle of May.
Marsh said a few of the new employees are in management training at other locations around the state. Cactus Enterprises is still looking for a few more shift managers and Marsh hopes that one of them will stand out and take the assistant store manager position.
The hiring of crew members will begin in the next couple of weeks. Crew members will start out at $14.25 per hour with a raise happening in July. Shift managers will start out at $16 with a raise once they go through a certification process. Candidates can apply at www.deltaco.com/careers.
The original Roseburg Del Taco, in the same location, was destroyed in a fire in July of 2022. The new building will be just over 2,300 square feet with seats for 48 people in the dining room, along with a drive-through. Cactus Enterprises also operates 6 other Del Taco stores in Oregon: Salem, Albany, two in Medford, Klamath Falls and Bend.
EASTER EGG DROP TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY APRIL 19TH
KQEN News Radio

Children ages 12 and under are invited to join Roseburg’s first Easter Egg Drop on the day before Easter and possibly catch a glimpse of the Easter Bunny.
A City of Roseburg release said Roseburg Parks and Recreation is teaming up with the Roseburg Fire Department to offer the free, family-friendly event at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19th at the Stewart Park softball field on Northwest Stewart Parkway.
Roseburg Fire personnel will drop 4,000 colorful empty plastic Easter eggs from a ladder truck in the field between the YMCA of Douglas County and Champion Car Wash Field, formerly known as Legion Field.
Kids will be challenged to collect one egg of each color to exchange for a prize or candy provided by Roseburg Parks, Roseburg Fire, Roseburg Public Library and local community partners such as the Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley, Cascade Community Credit Union, Umpqua Health Alliance and the YMCA.
Roseburg Recreation Coordinator Tracy David said, “We’re grateful for all of the donations and commitments from community organizations that make it possible to offer this event to kids for free”.
The Easter Bunny is expected to arrive aboard the Roseburg Fire Department’s 1934 Chevrolet antique fire engine to pose for photos with kids.
