ROSEBURG WEATHER QUIET THIS WEEK, AT OR ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES
KQEN News Radio

The weather in the Umpqua Valley this week should be quiet, with afternoon high temperatures at or slightly above normal for the next few days.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that Roseburg will see dry conditions, except for a chance of showers on Friday and Saturday. Wednesday is forecast to be the warmest day of the week, with a high temperature of just over 70 degrees.
The normal high for this week in April is 66 degrees. Forecasters said the high on Saturday was 72 degrees with the mercury reaching 65 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport on Sunday.
ROSEBURG HOMETOWN 4TH OF JULY GROUP SAYS NO 2025 FIREWORKS SHOW
KQEN News Radio

As things stand now, there will be no 4th of July fireworks show in Roseburg this year.
A social media post from the Roseburg Hometown 4th of July group said the non-profit organization is willing to meet with others who might want to take over the event, but an interview process and background checks will be involved.
While there is some money in the bank to help fund a show this year, organizers said the lack of volunteer help is the main issue. The organization has fizzled down to only two people who have been working to make a fireworks show happen. While a 2025 show does not seem feasible this year, the group said it has some good plans in place for a 2026 show, if more volunteers come forward.
Those interested in getting involved, or seeking more information, can reach out to the Roseburg Hometown 4th of July group via their Facebook page.

ROSEBURG LIBRARY RECEIVES NATIONAL GRANT FOR SMALL AND RURAL LIBRARIES
KQEN News Radio

Roseburg Public Library has been selected as one of 300 libraries to participate in round three of Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities.
A city release said it is an initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to help small and rural libraries better serve people with disabilities.
The competitive award from the American Library Association, in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries, brings a $10,000 grant to help the library deliver services to adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Roseburg library staff’s goals for their yearlong project include enhancing the library’s welcoming space for conversation and learning; providing programming opportunities; evaluating and updating the materials collection; and encouraging participants to develop lasting connections with the library and staff.
Roseburg Public Library Director Kris Wiley said, “As part of the grant, I will take an online course in how to lead conversations – a skill vital to library work today. I then will host conversations with adult patrons with disabilities about why they visit the library and how the library can serve them.”
The release said Wiley has scheduled community conversations to provide input on the grant-funded project at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 3rd and at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19th. Those interested in attending should contact Wiley at: kwiley@roseburgor.gov

Tragedy on OR 42: UCC Softball Team Involved in Fatal Crash
Oregon State Police Media Release
A tragic head-on crash on Oregon Route 42 has left two people dead and multiple members of the Umpqua Community College (UCC) softball team injured.
According to the Oregon State Police, the collision occurred when a westbound Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Johnathan James Dowdy, 32, of Coos Bay, crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound Chevrolet Express van head-on. The van, operated by Jami Lea Strinz, 46, of Roseburg, was carrying 10 members of the UCC softball team.
Dowdy suffered serious injuries and was transported to an emergency medical center.
Strinz was transported with critical injuries and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
One passenger in the van, Kiley Nevaeh Jones, 19, of Nampa, Idaho, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The remaining eight occupants of the Chevrolet Express suffered moderate to serious injuries and were treated by emergency medical personnel. Their identities have not been released at this time.
The highway was closed for approximately five hours while the crash scene was investigated. Authorities believe impaired driving was a primary factor in the crash.
Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, additional details are not being released at this time.
The Oregon State Police were assisted at the scene by the Myrtle Point Police Department, Coquille Police Department, Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Myrtle Point Fire, Coquille Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
