The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has made a Level III Sex Offender Notification to the public.

Undersheriff Brad O’Dell said 46-year-old Uriah Shawn Strauss was released from the Douglas County Jail on Wednesday per court order.

O’Dell said a Level III Sex Offender is defined as having the highest risk of reoffending and is subject to public notification. Strauss has convictions for Sex Abuse 1, and Attempted Rape 1.

O’Dell said Strauss may not knowingly communicate in any manner with a person under 18 years of age with the intent to commit a crime or for the purpose of arousing or satisfying the sexual desires of this individual or another person. $25,000 GRANT TO IMPROVE BIKE SAFETY EDUCATION

KQEN News Radio

A $25,000 grant is meant to improve bike safety education for Oregon youth and will help the work of a Douglas County non-profit organization.

A release from the Oregon Department of Transportation said the state is one of just three states receiving a grant aimed at making biking safer for young people in underserved communities.

The funds are from the Governors Highway Safety Association and the National Road Safety Foundation,

In partnership with Thrive Umpqua’s Safe Routes to School program, ODOT will use the funds to purchase a fleet of 40 bicycles, along with helmets and safety materials. These resources will support hands-on bike safety education for students in at least seven low-income rural schools, helping young riders gain confidence while learning essential road safety skills.

The release said the goal of the program is to create safer walking, biking and scooting options for young people while fostering a culture of active transportation in Oregon’s rural communities. By providing the necessary equipment and instruction, the grants will help ensure that children can safely and confidently use biking as a transportation option.

Oregon’s Safe Routes to School Education Program manager at ODOT Heidi Manlove, said, “By working with local partners and schools, we’re creating opportunities for students to be active and safe in their daily lives”. Manlove said, “We’re excited to see the impact this project will have on these communities”.

Similar grants have been awarded to Missouri and Washington, with all three states working toward safer transportation options for youth nationwide.

MERKLEY,PAUL US STRIKES ON YEMEN UNDERMINE LAW

KQEN News Radio

On Tuesday, in response to escalating U.S. military strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and Kentucky’s U.S. Senator Rand Paul joined forces to urge the Trump administration to adhere to the Constitution and consult with Congress in order to avoid stumbling into another costly and unnecessary war.

A joint release said their bipartisan effort is demanding swift answers amid growing national security concerns as a result of U.S. military engagement in the region and what they believe is the administration’s careless decision-making.

In a letter to President Trump, Merkley and Paul wrote: “U.S. military action must have a clear strategy that advances our country’s long-term national security objectives and is compliant with the law of armed conflict. Congress should be briefed about the recent strikes against the Houthis and the total cost expected to be incurred by this campaign at the American taxpayer’s expense”.

Merkley and Paul continued, “The Administration must also explain to Congress and the American people its expected path forward given the failure of previous such efforts and statements from the Administration that the military campaign will continue and possibly expand to include military action against Iran”.

Merkley and Paul reminded the president of the requirements under the War Powers Resolution of 1973 to notify Congress in the event of military engagement. They asked for a classified briefing within 10 days to address their concerns.
