Isolated to scattered thunderstorms expected through the weekend

Isolated areas of near-critical winds/low RH possible across the Modoc and East Side on Sunday

DISCUSSION: Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected in the afternoons/evenings through the weekend, with a relative lull in activity on Saturday. The best chance for scattered storms today will be along the Cascades and in portions of Fire Zone 280, with isolated storms possible in the Illinois/Applegate/Rogue Valleys. A stronger system will bring showers and thunderstorms to northern California and east of the Cascades on Sunday. Gusty winds Sunday afternoon could combine with low RHs and result in areas of near-critical conditions east of the Cascades and across the Modoc. A dry, more stable pattern is expected next week, with thunderstorms dropping out of the forecast by Monday.

MT. NEBO FIRE 50 PERCENT TRAILED

KQEN News Radio

Crews with the Roseburg Fire Department, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and the Douglas Forest Protective Association had the 4-acre Mt. Nebo Wildland Fire 50 percent trailed as of 10:00 p.m. Thursday night.

The fire was reported shortly before 7:00 p.m. with flames seen along Interstate 5 near the southbound on-ramp from West Harvard Avenue and quickly moving up the mountain. A DFPA helicopter did multiple water bucket drops on the fire while a plane from the agency flew in the area to monitor where the fire was headed. At around 7:30 p.m. smoke from the fire was thick along the freeway making it hard for motorists to see, but the road remained open.

An RPD update said residents will continue to see fire and smoke visible as crews work to get the fire 100 percent trailed by early Friday morning. Wildland firefighters are working in steep, rocky conditions. Incident command of the fire was turned over to DFPA late Thursday night.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. Thursday aerial resources were grounded due to illegal drone use over the fire area. DFPA said those responsible may be subject to civil penalties, including fines of up to $25,000 and potential criminal prosecution.

Pacific Power shut down power to nearby communication towers. This has impacted all Brooke Communications FM radio stations. Those signals may be streamed via www.541radio.com. News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN and The Score 92.3 FM and 1490 AM can be heard on their AM signals

The cause of the Mt. Nebo Wildland Fire is under investigation. Douglas County remains in high fire danger.

Additional information from DFPA and RFD will be released Friday morning.

COMMISSIONERS ISSUE PROCLAMATIONS: COAST GUARD DAY/LIGHTHOUSE WEEK

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, Douglas County Commissioners Tim Freeman, Tom Kress, and Chris Boice were on location in Winchester Bay for a special presentation for National Coast Guard Day and National Lighthouse Day and Week.

A county release said proclamations were issued for both.

History celebrates August 4,1790 as the official birthday of the United States Coast Guard. On that day, President George Washington signed the “Tariff Act”, which authorized Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton to build the first ten cutter vessels to protect the new nation’s revenue. Later, President Woodrow Wilson signed the “Coast Guard Act” into law on January 28th, 1915. A number of officers from the USCG Base North Bend and at the USCG Station Umpqua River attended the event.

Commissioners also recognized National Lighthouse Day and Week. It is celebrated each year during the week of August 3rd-7th and on August 7th. 236 years ago on August 7, 1789, Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouse, beans, buoys and public piers in the United States. The Umpqua River Lighthouse is one of 11 historic lighthouses that have guided ships to safe passage along the Oregon coast for over 100 years. In attendance representing the lighthouse were Museum Director James Davis and other staff.

ROSEBURG CITY COUNCIL WITH SPECIAL MEETING/TURF PROJECT PROPOSAL

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council will have a special meeting on Monday night to continue discussion about a proposal at Fir Grove Park.

The meeting will begin off-site at 6:00 p.m. with a tour of the soccer field at the park. At 6:25 p.m. the council will check out the turf football field at Roseburg High School.

At 7:00 p.m. the council will meet in the Umpqua Room of the Public Safety Center on Southeast Douglas Avenue. Councilors will consider authorizing staff to seek grant funding to pay for a project that would include turning two of the fields in the park into turf fields. A construction estimate has the project expected to cost $3 million. A staff report has indicated the city would seek grant funding in the amount of $1 million from both the Umpqua Health Alliance and from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

The project received a lengthy amount of debate at last week’s council meeting, but no decision was made.

The meeting will be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page and can be seen later at www.cityofroseburg.org

HAPPY TAILS DOG PARK REOPENING FRIDAY

KQEN News Radio

Roseburg’s dog park will reopen late Friday afternoon, following flood-damage repairs.

A city release said Happy Tails Dog Park is set to reopen by the end of the workday, after all repair work has been completed.

On Tuesday, a crew from Roseburg based Pacific Northwest Fence Company began installing about 750 feet of new fencing wire after the old fence was mangled during the South Umpqua River flood event in March. The crew also replaced green “T posts” on which they stretched the wire fencing.

Welding on the park’s gates was completed on Thursday, and the gates will be installed on Friday. The gates will be used to create the two-gated entrance that serves as a holding pen for dogs and their companions to enter and exit the park without other animals accidentally getting out at the same time.

Last week, the crew dug holes and set 20 brace posts whose concrete bases need to cure for about seven days at the corner of Southeast Templin Avenue and Southeast Arizona Street.

Roseburg Parks staff and seasonal workers are also working at the park this week to continue removing debris, downed tree sections and sand that was left by the flood. On Tuesday, a four-person crew removed additional debris so more sections of the park can be mowed and weeds trimmed. Staff also installed 40 yards of bark mulch to the parking lot islands on Thursday.

Park repairs will cost $15,000.
