ROSEBURG HAS HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR MONDAY, BREAKS RECORD FOR THE DATE
KQEN News Radio

Monday was the hottest day of the year so far in Roseburg, and the high temperature broke the record high for the date.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 105 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. The record high for August 11th had been 104 degrees, set in 2014.
Tuesday should be the last triple-digit day for the foreseeable future with a high of around 100 degrees forecast. It’s not likely to break a record as the hottest August 12th was in 1935 when the high got to 106 degrees.
Forecasters said gradual cooling will begin on Wednesday with highs at near normal temperatures starting Thursday.
HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 2:00 AM. WEDNESDAY
KQEN News Radio

A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 2:00 a.m. Wednesday for Central Douglas County.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said hot temperatures of 100 t0 105 degrees are expected with overnight temperatures of 65 to 70 degrees.
The Advisory area includes portions of the Umpqua Basin and applies to the communities of Roseburg, Camas Valley, Elkton, Drain, Sutherlin, Glendale, Riddle and Canyonville.
Forecasters said unusually hot temperatures will increase the risk of heat illnesses. Warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief from daytime temperatures.
Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are seen.
FIRE DANGER LEVEL INCREASES TO EXTREME IN JACKSON AND JOSEPHINE COUNTIES
KQEN News Radio

Due to dry vegetation, fire behavior and windy conditions, the fire danger level on lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry in Jackson and Josephine counties has increased to “extreme” as of Tuesday morning.
An update said these regulations impact 1.8 million acres of state, private, county, city and Bureau of Land Management lands protected by ODF’s Southwest Oregon District. The Industrial Fire Precaution Level remains at 2.
A long list of public fire restrictions is now in effect. Complete details at www.swofire.com/public-fire-restrictions.
ROSEBURG SUMMERTIME ROAD RESURFACING STARTS THURSDAY
KQEN News Radio

Maintenance to extend the life of about 2.6 miles of streets in southeastern Roseburg is set to begin on Thursday, weather permitting.
A city release said the Roseburg Public Works Department asks vehicle owners to remove their vehicles from street sections scheduled and posted for maintenance to allow crews to complete the work. “No parking and “road closed” signs will be set out three days before each closure.
Contractors have been hired to apply slurry seals with the work being performed on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The project is expected to be finished by the end of day on August 29th.
Slurry seals combine a thin layer of gravel or aggregate with an asphalt emulsifier, which is applied to help preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure.
The release said all service providers including waste disposal, the U.S. Post Office, package delivery services and others have been notified and given road maintenance schedules so they can work around the project. Emergency responders will have complete access even when residents can’t use certain roads, according to Public Works staff.
Residents who normally park their vehicles on streets scheduled for maintenance must remove those vehicles from the street before work starts so crews can apply the slurry seals. Advance notice will be given to every residence prior to scheduled start dates. Vehicles found on those streets after scheduled start dates will be towed at the owner’s expense.

$35 MILLION INVESTMENT HONORS VETERANS FOR NEW ROSEBURG FACILITY
KQEN News Radio

A major step forward for Oregon’s veterans has been announced with the approval of $35 million in funding for the construction of a new veteran’s home in Roseburg.
A joint release from state representatives Virgle Osborne, Court Boice, and Alek Skarlatos along with State Senator David Brock Smith said the funding, secured through HB 5006, represents a significant investment in long-term care and support for those who have served the country. First secured in 2024, this is the required 35 percent state match for the estimated $100 million facility, which would be the 3rd veteran’s home, to be built in Oregon.
Lawmakers said the new facility will provide high-quality, locally accessible care for veterans in southern Oregon, addressing a long-standing need in the region. The home will offer a range of services including skilled nursing, rehabilitation and memory care, while fostering a supportive and respectful environment for veterans and their families.
A joint statement from the legislators said, “This is a proud day for Southern Oregon. Our Veterans have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. It is our responsibility to ensure they receive the care and dignity they deserve. Securing funding for a Veteran’s Home in Roseburg is about more than just infrastructure – it’s about honoring service, strengthening our communities and keeping care close to home for those who’ve served”. The statement continued, “We’re grateful to see this investment move forward, and appreciate all the support from our Veterans, County Commissioners and residents.
The release said lawmakers, the Oregon Department of Veteran’s Affairs and federal representatives, have worked to ensure Tier 1 status on the Federal Registry, which greenlights it for federal funding.
REPRESENTATIVE OSBORNE CELEBRATES FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY CANCER CENTER
KQEN News Radio

Last week Governor Kotek signed HB 5006, a major appropriations bill that included $176,721 in funding for the Community Cancer Center in Roseburg.
The non-profit center, which provides high-quality radiation therapy services, will use the funds to significantly enhance its cancer treatment infrastructure.
State Representative Virgle Osborne said, “The funds secured for the Community Cancer will enhance its healthcare capabilities”. Osborne said, “Rural Oregon needs organizations like the Community Cancer Center – those that prioritize the well-being of our rural communities. This funding will help ensure that care continues and improves”.
Community Cancer Center Executive Director Tammy Turner said, “On behalf of the Community Cancer Center, I extend our deepest gratitude to Representative Virgle Osborne and his dedicated staff for their unwavering support of our mission”. Turner said the investment will enhance their ability to provide compassionate, high-quality cancer care and support services to those they serve. Turner said, “We are truly thankful for their partnership in advancing our vision of hope, healing, and strength for our community”.
H.O.P.E DRUG COURT TO CELEBRATE 110TH GRADUATION
KQEN News Radio

The 110th H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduation is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th beginning at 5:15 p.m. to celebrate Robert Byant, Brittany Holmes, Kristy Parham, and Rachel Stauffer.
Graduation will be in the Cascade Hall in the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said H.O.P.E. Drug Court is a powerful example of justice reform in action. Since its inception in 1996, the program has supported individuals overcoming substance use, reducing criminal recidivism and improving their psychosocial well-being. This intensive collaborative effort produces significant cost savings – saving the state $4.56 million in 2024 alone.
The graduation event will include guest speaker Curtis “Wall Street” Carroll. While serving time in prison, he taught himself to read, write and spell, eventually earning his GED. His journey of financial interdependence led him to co-develop FEEL – Financial Empowerment Emotional Literacy, a behavior-targeted finance philosophy.
During the graduate phase of Drug Court, participants design a community project connected to their recovery journey or inspired by something that has deeply impacted their lives. Community projects this graduation benefited these organizations:
- Adapt Crossroads Inpatient Program
- Connecting Point & Opioid Treatment Program
- Douglas County Juvenile Department programs
- NAMI – Mental Health Awareness 5K
- Oregon DHS Child Welfare Division
- Safe at Home/FARA
- Saving Grace Humane Society
