Roseburg Area Morning News

COOLING BEGINS AFTER THREE DAYS IN THE TRIPLE DIGITS

KQEN News Radio

A cooling trend is beginning in the Umpqua Valley after three days of triple digit temperatures.

Data from the National Weather Service in Medford said the mercury reached 101 degrees on Tuesday at the Roseburg Regional Airport. Monday’s high was 104 degrees while it got to 103 degrees on Sunday.

Wednesday should drop around 10 degrees with a high in the low 90s expected. Highs will be in the low to mid-80s on Thursday and Friday. The weekend should cool to between the mid-70s and 80 degrees. There is even a 50 percent chance of showers on Saturday morning, though the opportunity for moisture will be short lived.

The fire was reported late Tuesday afternoon. A Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest social media post said the fire was estimated at 70 acres, as of 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night. It is burning in heavy timber. Resources on the scene include 17 engines, four hand crews, three dozers, two falling modules, and multiple aircraft. Additional resources are on order.

The Oregon Department of Transportation was requested to help with traffic control on Highway 230. The Umpqua National Forest is also providing assistance with two engines, one crew and a dozer.

Law enforcement is investigating the cause of the Scenic Fire, according to Forest Service post.

CFPA is being assisted by the Douglas Forest Protective Association, U.S. Forest Service, Severity Aircraft from the Oregon Department of Forestry and contract crews including engines and medical personnel.

LAWMAKERS CELEBRATE $1.4 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR ROCK CREEK HATCHERY

KQEN News Radio

Southern Oregon lawmakers have announced that Rock Creek Hatchery will receive $1.4 million in funding as part of House Bill 5006, a major appropriations bill signed last week by Governor Tina Kotek.

A joint release from state representatives Virgle Osborne and Court Boice and State Senator David Brock Smith said the funding will support critical operations, bolster research efforts, and expand partnerships with the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe, the Douglas Timber Operators and the Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby volunteers to strengthen hatchery production, salmonid populations and help address salmonid predation from bass.

Representative Osborne said, “Rock Creek Hatchery plays a critical role in balancing conservation with access to fishing”. Osborne said, “This funding supports the hatchery’s mission to protect native fish populations while also ensuring Oregonians can continue to enjoy the outdoors”.

Representative Boice said, “This is a smart investment in our region”. Boice said, “Whether it’s for recreation or for our local economies, this funding helps maintains healthy fish runs and opportunities to harvest for generations to come”.

Senator Brock Smith said, “We’re proud to support this historic facility that understands the importance of both preserving our natural resources and sustaining access to them”. Brock Smith said, “We originally introduced this need in HB 512. This hatchery’s work supports strong partnerships and a future where conservation and harvest go hand in hand.

The release said the lawmakers continue to work with federal agencies, tribal members, DTO and stakeholders to see the needed investments to Rock Creek Hatchery move forward.

REEDSPORT WITH WATER SYSTEM/FIRE HYDRANT TESTING

KQEN News Radio

The Reedsport Fire Department will be performing water system/fire hydrant flushing on all streets on the north side of Highway 101 from 16th Street to Port Dock Road. Work will start on Thursday and should be completed by Friday.

All residents and system users are advised that there may be a temporary drop in water pressure during the system flushing process. After flushing is complete, there may be a milky coloration in the water. These are bubbles and will resolve shortly. There may also be a small amount of sediment that may be present due to flushing operations.

If either of these conditions are present, users should reasonably run water until the conditions improve.

Anyone with questions should contact the City of Reedsport Public Works Department at 541-271-2809.

POURING GENEROSITY CAMPAIGN RUNS THROUGH AUGUST

KQEN News Radio

The Pouring Generosity campaign from the United Community Action Network’s Food Bank continues through the end of August.

Now in its eighth year, the campaign invites community members to support the county’s emergency food system by visiting participating Umpqua Valley wineries, local brew breweries and coffer brewers. The goal of the campaign is to raise $20,000 to help fight hunger across Douglas County.

UCAN Food Bank Manager Val Gordon said, “This year, we have seen a record number of people accessing emergency food. With so many people in need, it is great to see so many local businesses stepping up to help”. Gordon said, “They are truly feeding hope in our community”.

As part of the Oregon Food Bank statewide network, the UCAN Food Bank has more buying power when it comes to food. For every $1 dollar contributed, they can leverage 3 meals or 4 to 5 pounds of food.
