KQEN News Radio

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association dealt with the Dole Knob Fire on Wednesday afternoon.
DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said the fire was called in at around 1:30 p.m. South Umpqua Fire Department, Myrtle Creek Fire, and the Cow Creek Tribal Police also responded to an estimated 1-acre fire near the 500 block of Northeast Dole Road in Myrtle Creek.
Pope said upon arriving at the scene, crews discovered a grass fire spreading rapidly uphill. All responding firefighters took immediate action, including DFPA’s air attack, one type 2 helicopter, three type 6 engines, two type 3 engines, a dozer and overhead command. Pope said the coordinated effort by everyone involved quickly contained the fire, limiting its growth to 2.63 acres.
The Dole Knob Fire posed no threat to homes or structures. It has been identified as human-caused but is still under investigation.
Pope said the fire danger is currently extreme throughout the Douglas District. Information on fire restrictions is available at www.dfpa.net

OREGON’S NONFARM PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT DROPS BY 2,700 IN JULY
KQEN News Radio

In July, Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment declined by 2,700 jobs, following a revised loss of 6,800 jobs in June.
An Oregon Employment Department release said July’s losses were largest in financial activities, professional and business services, and health care and social assistance, which lost 2,700, 1,400, and 1,100 jobs respectively. Gains were largest in construction and transportation, warehousing and utilities, which added 2,900 and 800 jobs respectively.
State Employment Economist Gail Krumemauer said construction employed 112,700 in July, rebounding from its relatively weak prior two months, but landing well below its average level of 117,500 jobs during the prior two years.
OED said professional and business services have been on a declining trend since early 2023. Accounting for 254,100 jobs in July, it is down 14,800 jobs or 5.5 percent, since its peak employment in March 2023. Each of the three component industries dropped by a similar percentage during that period.
Newly revised numbers for this year show lower employment levels than previously estimated for most industries. Since July 2024, Oregon’s total nonfarm payroll employment dropped 24,600 jobs or 1.2 percent. Manufacturing lost 9,400 jobs or 5.0 percent. Information, private education, wholesale trade, financial activities, and construction each cut between 3 and 4 percent. In that time, only two major industries expanded: health care and social assistance added 9,800 jobs or 3.2 percent, and leisure and hospitality gained 2,000 jobs or 1.0 percent.
Oregon’s unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in July and 4.9 percent in June, after rising gradually over the past year from 4.2 percent in July of 2024. Oregon’s unemployment rate was 1.4 percentage points higher than the recent low of 3.6 percent during the spring of 2023. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in June and 4.2 percent in July.
LEGISLATORS ANNOUNCE OVER $500,000 FOR SUTHERLIN FIRE TRAINING CENTER
KQEN News Radio

Two local legislators have announced over a half-million dollars to support critical improvements to the Sutherlin Fire Training Center.
A release from State Representative Virgle Osborne and State Senator David Brock Smith said the Sutherlin Fire Department will receive $504,000. The funding will help modernize training infrastructure, enhance firefighter readiness and strengthen emergency response capabilities for Sutherlin and surrounding communities.
Representative Virgle Osborne said, “This funding is about making sure our local firefighters have the tools and training they need to respond effectively in times of crisis”. Osborne said, “The Sutherlin Fire Training Center” plays a vital role in preparing our first responders, and these improvements will ensure they’re equipped to protect our communities safely and efficiently”.
Senator Brock Smith said, “I’m proud to support this investment in our local fire service”. Brock Smith said, “Well-trained emergency personnel are the backbone of rural public safety, and this funding will go a long way in supporting both current firefighters and the next generation of first responders”.
SUMMERTIME ROAD MAINTENANCE RESURFACING POSTPONED TO SEPTEMBER
KQEN News Radio

Maintenance to extend the life of about 2.6 miles of Roseburg streets has been postponed from late August until September, due to weather issues.
A city release said the contractor hired to perform slurry seals on streets this month contacted staff on Wednesday to postpone the work after rain delays on other, unrelated projects forced them to push back start dates.
Slurry seals in southeastern Roseburg that had been scheduled for late this month, are now postponed until sometime after Labor Day, according to Public Works Director Ryan Herinckx.
Road maintenance is always weather-dependent. New dates have not been determined yet.
Slurry seals combine a thin layer of gravel or aggregate with an asphalt emulsifier, and that is applied to a paved surface to help preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure and provide a new driving surface.
