SUPPRESSION EFFORTS CONTINUE ON HISTORIC DOERNER TREE FIRE
KQEN News Radio

Firefighters from the Coos Forest Protective Association are actively engaged in suppression efforts on the Doerner Fir Tree fire. The historic tree, located east of Coquille on Bureau of Land Management land, was displaying active flames on the top and burning down a portion of the trunk.
Multiple engines and a hand crew are on scene as well as overhead from BLM to help coordinate suppression efforts with the CFPA. Helicopter bucket drops were used to cool the active fire near the top of the tree. Utilizing existing trail systems, firefighters have constructed hand line for containment around the entire perimeter near the base of the tree to prevent further spread. Sprinklers are in place at the base of the tree to slow fire activity, but firefighters are unable to work directly under the tree due to the risk of fallout from the burning treetop.
Management is working to determine the cause of the fire. The area is closed to the public at this time due to active fire and firefighting efforts.
The Doerner Fir Tree stands over 325 feet high and is one of the tallest non-redwood trees in the world. It is estimated to be 450 to 500 years old.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.

HOYLE ANNOUNCES OVER $16.6 MILLION FOR 15 COMMUNITY PROJECTS
KQEN News Radio

U.S. Representative Val Hoyle has announced that she recently secured $16.625 million in Community Project Funding from the federal government for projects across Oregon’s 4th district.
A release said the funding, which would become available if Congress passes full-year appropriations bills, would be awarded in varying amounts to 15 towns, community colleges and local organizations.
In Douglas County, two projects were selected. $3.15 million would be allocated to Umpqua Community College for affordable housing for rural workforce training students. $800,000 would go to Glide Revitalization for a community resource center.
Projects in Benton, Coos, Curry, Lane, and Lincoln counties were picked as well.
Hoyle said the money is not guaranteed until Congress passes the final appropriations legislation and they are signed into law.
SPECIAL TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT PATROLS THROUGH SEPTEMBER
KQEN News Radio

For the remaining days of August, through the end of September, the Roseburg Police Department has some extra patrols out working traffic enforcement, with a specific focus on safety belt use, distracted driving, speeding, and driving under the influence.
An RPD release said the focused patrols are made possible due to grants received from Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The release said seat belts have been proven to be one of the best ways to save lives in a crash. Yet many still don’t buckle up. Not wearing a seat belt is a habit that will be passed on to impressionable youth, who in turn will think it’s safe not to buckle up.
RPD said distracted driving is one of the fastest growing safety issues on the roads today. Distracted drivers are not just a threat to themselves; they are a danger to everyone else on the road. The national distracted driving effort focuses on ways to change the behavior of drivers through legislation, enforcement, public awareness and education.
Drivers should be on the lookout for specific enforcement campaigns over the next two months.
