Roseburg Area Morning News

UMPQUA, SMITH, NORTH FORK SMITH RIVERS FISHERY IS NOW CLOSED

KQEN News Radio

Fishing for Chinook salmon, both hatchery and wild, has closed on the Umpqua, Smith and North Fork Smith rivers because the quota of 500 wild fall Chinook has been reached.

An update from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said with forecasted low returns of wild fall Chinook salmon in the rivers, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted this limited fishery at their June meeting.

Umpqua District Fish Biologist Evan Leonetti said the Chinook fishery began slowly with just 30 percent of the quota harvested in July.

Leonetti said, “We typically see low catch rates in July as fall Chinook are beginning to move into the bay. Angler harvest increased in August, and the quota was met on August 16. Although limited, we were pleased to be able to provide some opportunity for harvest this year”.

The update said many wild fall Chinook spawn in the South Umpqua River and a large portion spawn in the Smith, North Fork Smith rivers and other tributaries. Low returns in the Umpqua Basin in 2024 was a catalyst for the Commission to adopt a cautious, quota-based approach to this season’s wild fall Chinook fishery. ODFW will be closely monitoring this year’s return to the spawning grounds to ensure healthy future runs and sustainable fisheries.

SCHOLFIELD FIRE MOP UP CONTINUES

KQEN News Radio

On Monday, the Schofield Fire, burning near Reedsport, saw firefighters continuing aggressive mop up and grinding the fires perimeter for heat. An update from the Coos Forest Protective Association said firefighters continued to utilize wet ground conditions to aid this process. The fires perimeter showed no growth, holding at 50 acres with containment rising to 57 percent. Crews will continue to be in the area daily working towards 100 percent containment.

Fire danger remains moderate on land protected by the CFPA. Get fire season updates at: https://www.coosfpa.net/

HOYLE CONDEMNS PRESIDENT’S PUSH TO ELIMINATE MAIL-IN VOTING

KQEN News Radio

In response to President Trump’s recent promise to eliminate mail-in voting, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle issued a statement:

Hoyle said, “Oregon was the first state to enact full vote by mail, an effort led by both Democratic and Republican Secretaries of State. In Oregon, we’ve proven for nearly 30 years that vote-by-mail is safe, secure, cost-effective and trusted by Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike. There is a paper copy of every ballot, every signature is verified, and the system works. That’s why Oregon consistently has some of the highest voter participation in the country”.

Hoyle said, “President Trump’s pledge to end mail-in voting is voter suppression. From pushing for mid-decade partisan redistricting, working to purge swing state voter rolls and now this, Republicans are actively working to make it harder for Americans to vote in 2026 because they don’t want to run on their record. The Constitution is clear: the responsibility of overseeing federal elections, including the Times, Place, and Manner of holding them belongs to the state and Congress. His actions are federal overreach designed to undermine free and fair elections in 2026”.

Hoyle and Senator Ron Wyden introduced the Vote at Home Act earlier this year. Information on that legislation can be found here.

UCC BEGINS CONSTRUCTION ON WELCOME CENTER/MEDICAL CAREERS HUB

KQEN News Radio

Last week, Umpqua Community College officially launched construction of its new Welcome Center and Medical Careers Hub, with the demolition of the Del Blanchard Administration Building and a celebration ceremony.

A UCC release said the $21.5 million project will serve as both a new front door to campus and a vital hub for healthcare workforce training in Douglas County. The facility is scheduled for completion in December 2026, with a grand opening in early 2027.

UCC President Dr. Rachel Pokrandt said, “This is so much more than a building project – it’s a commitment to student success and to meeting critical workforce needs in Douglas County”. Pokrandt said, “When completed, the Welcome Center and Medical Careers Hub will open doors – literally and figuratively – for generations to come”.

The building’s first floor will house UCC’s new Welcome Center, a one-stop resource for prospective and incoming students. This welcoming “front door” will streamline enrollment, advising and support services.

The second floor will feature the Medical Careers Hub, expanding UCC’s medical training programs with state-of-the-art simulation labs, skills training rooms, and technology-rich classrooms. The release said this space will address the region’s shortage of trained healthcare professionals and create pathways to family-thriving wage careers. Equipment for the Medical Careers Hub is funded through Congressionally directed spending championed by U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley.

This investment is made possible through the generosity of lead donors and partners whose donations helped secure an $8 million matching grant from the Oregon Legislature, bringing fundraiser to more than $18 million. Fundraising efforts continue.

The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College presents a series of assemblage art pieces by Ralf Huber about the atrocities of child labor, past and present, in “Turning the/into Tools”.

The show will be on display at the Whipple Fine Arts Center at UCC from September 15th through October 15th. Gallery hours are weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A reception and artist talk will take place on September 25th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Huber was born in Laufenburg, Switzerland and lived in Germany until he moved to the United States in 2003.

His mixed media assemblage art draws heavily from the time of the industrial revolution of the 19th century into the early 20th century and addresses the issue of industry using children as human capital.
