.DISCUSSION...Warm temperatures continue throug the week. Scattered thunderstorms are expected along and east of the Cascades and over northern California today, and possibly into the Rogue Valley as well. Gusty outflow winds and heavy rain are the main threats in these storms. A nocturnal threat exists tonight, mainly east of the Cascades. Additional scattered thunderstorms are possible Wednesday. Dry, more seasonable conditions are forecast by the end of the week.

SUMMER REFUSES TO GO AWAY, TEMPERATURES REMAIN IN THE 90S THROUGH FRIDAY

Summer refuses to go away, with high temperatures in the 90s remaining in place for the Umpqua Valley through Friday.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that an upper ridge of high pressure is expected to stay in place, leading to afternoon high temperatures several degrees above seasonal norms until the weekend.
The mercury reached 98 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport on Monday, but was not a record high for the date.
RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT TUESDAY 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect Tuesday from.1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for parts of southwest and southcentral Oregon.
The National Weather Service said abundant lightning on dry fuels will result in the potential for numerous new fire starts.
The Warning area includes the Southern Oregon Cascades and the Umpqua National Forest.
FINAL DAY OF COOLING RESOURCE CENTER IN DOWNTOWN ROSEBURG

With temperatures forecast to moderate slightly, Tuesday is the final day for the Cooling Resource Center in downtown Roseburg.
The facility had over 70 guests on Monday, which was a record.
Organized by the Schlueter/Greenwalt Foundation, the center is at Saint George Episcopal Church on Southeast Cass Avenue. It will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Donations of snack foods and other items are needed.

DFPA DEALS WITH TWO SMALL FIRES ON MONDAY

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association dealt with two small fires on Monday.
A DFPA social media post said there were a few lightning strikes on DFPA protected lands. The first fire was estimated at 0.01 of an acre and was in timber about 13.5 miles northeast of Oakland. Fire activity was quickly knocked down. By 1:30 p.m. the fire had been 100 percent trailed with 100 percent mop-up complete.
At 3:30 p.m. DFPA responded to an estimated 1/10th of an acre fire, which appeared to be a single struck tree, approximately 12.5 miles northeast of Idleyld Park. That fire had grown to an estimated 0.25 of an acre by 4:30 p.m. DFPA’s air and ground resources engaged in an aggressive initial attack. The ground fire was 100 percent mopped up by 6:30 p.m. 3 trees burned in the fire.

H.O.P.E DRUG COURT GRADUATION IS TUESDAY NIGHT

The 110th H.O.P.E. Drug Court Graduation is happening on Tuesday night.
The event will celebrate graduates Robert Bryant, Brittany Holmes, Kristy Parham and Rachel Stauffer. It will take place in the Cascade Hall building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, beginning at 5:15 p.m.
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said its inception in 1996; the program has supported individuals in reducing criminal recidivism and improving their psychosocial well-being. The intensive collaborative effort produces significant cost savings – saving the state $4.56 million in 2024.
The event will celebrate the dedication, resilience and growth of each graduate. The guest speaker will be Curtis “Wall Street” Carroll. While serving time in prison, he taught himself to read, write and spell, eventually earning his GED. His journey of self-awareness and pursuit of financial independence led him to co-develop Financial Empowerment Emotional Literacy, a behavior targeted finance philosophy. His work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch and other outlets.

REEDSPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT TO CONTINUE WATER SYSTEM TESTING

The Reedsport Fire Department will continue performing water system/fire hydrant flushing on all streets on the south side of Highway 101 from the west end of Winchester Avenue to east Elm Street through this Friday.
A city release said all residents and system users are advised that there may be a temporary drop in water pressure during the system flushing process. In addition, after the flushing is complete, there may be a “milky” coloration to the water. These are bubbles and will resolve shortly. There may also be a small amount of sediment that may be present due to flushing operations. If either of these conditions are present, run the water until conditions improve.

K9S IN THE GRAPEVINES COMING SOON

Tickets are still on sale for K9s in the Grapevines, which is coming soon.
The event be on Friday, September 5th at Melrose Vineyards.
It is presented by Friends of Umpqua Valley Police K9s. The evening will include food, wine and a silent auction. Attendees can meet local police K9 teams and learn more about the impact of the programs.
K9s in the Grapevines will be held at Melrose Vineyards on Melqua Road, west of Roseburg. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. with dinner served at 5:45 p.m. Tickets are $70 per person if purchased before Friday. After that, they will be sold for $80.

PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE OPENS ON SEPTEMBER 4TH

Umpqua Actors Community Theatre has its production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile on- stage September 4th through the 21st. It is comedian Steve Martin’s absurd comedy of historical fiction which has Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso meeting in a bar in Paris in 1904. That was the year before Eistein’s theory of relativity and Picasso’s transition to cubism. The two celebrities of science and art spar for their fields, surrounded by a cast of supporting characters from the turn of the century and beyond.
The production will be on stage Thursday through Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults. Due to minor language and content in the show, the production is recommended for audiences aged 13 and older.

SUTHERLIN MAN JAILED FOR ALLEGED MENACING/RESISTING INCIDENT

A Sutherlin man was jailed for an alleged menacing and resisting incident on Sunday.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said just after 11:30 a.m. 22-year-old Nathaniel Volz allegedly threatened a victim with a knife stating, “One of us has to die”. The incident reportedly occurred at a residence in the 300 block of Deady Crossing in the Sutherin area.
A deputy contacted Volz along with Sutherlin Police officers. The man allegedly resisted being handcuffed and after a brief struggle, he was taken into custody. Volz was charged with menacing, resisting arrest, and unlawful use of a weapon. Bail was set at $3,000.
