Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California
National Weather Service Medford, OR
541 AM PDT Thu Aug 28 2025
DISCUSSION: Some slight cooling is expected over the next few days, but highs are expected to remain above normal through Friday. Today will be the last day of thunderstorm concerns for our area. Conditions dry out quickly Thursday into Friday, and a building pressure gradient will bring breezy south winds to portions of Siskiyou County. A passing upper level trough will cool temperatures slightly this weekend, but will also produce dry and breezy weather across much of the area, especially east of the Cascades.

A ridge of high pressure is staying in place in the Umpqua Valley, but some cooling is expected for the next two days.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that highs should be right at or slightly above 90 degrees on Thursday and Friday. Forecasters said some areas of low pressure will pull temperatures down to the mid 80’s starting this weekend.
The mercury reached 95 degrees on Wednesday at the Roseburg Regional Airport.
GOVERNOR ORDERS FLAGS LOWERED AT HALF-STAFF: MINNEAPOLIS SHOOTING
KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, Governor Tina Kotek ordered flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff until sunset on August 31st, pursuant to a Presidential Proclamation in honor of the victims and survivors of the shooting that occurred at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Governor Kotek said, “Children and educators deserve to be safe in their schools”. Governor Kotek said, “I offer my deepest condolences to the students and families who had their first week of school shattered by this senseless act of gun violence. Oregon’s thoughts and prayers are with you”.
COUNTY GOVERNMENT OFFICES TO CLOSE ON MONDAY- LABOR DAY
KQEN News Radio

Douglas County Commissioners Tim Freeman, Tom Kress, and Chris Boice are reminding residents that county government offices at the courthouse, Justice Building, County Annex in Reedsport, fairgrounds office, landfill and transfer sites, and all external government offices will be closed to the public on Monday, September 1st in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
A county release said that even when government offices are closed, many officials and public employees continue working on special, routine, or emergency projects. That includes members of the Board of Commissioners, Sheriff’s Office, Juvenile Department, Public Works Department, Emergency Management Department, and Salmon Harbor Marina.
On Monday, the Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History in Roseburg, as well as the Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum in Winchester Bay will be open to visitors.
All county parks, campgrounds and boat ramps will be open and accessible to the public. Salmon Harbor Marina and Winchester Bay RV Park will be open as well.
911 communications and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office staff will continue to provide law enforcement and emergency assistance for residents. Those with an emergency can call 911. The non-emergency number for DCSO is 440-4471.
ROSEBURG ROAD RESURFACING TO BEGIN SOON
KQEN News Radio

Maintenance to extend the life of over 2.5 miles of southeastern Roseburg streets is set to begin next Wednesday, September 3rd, weather permitting.
A city release said the Roseburg Public Works Department asks vehicle owners to be sure to remove their vehicles from street sections scheduled and posted for maintenance to allow crews to complete the work. “No parking” and “road closed” signs will be set up three days before each closure
Contractors have been hired to apply slurry seals on street sections from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on September 3rd and 4th. Weather delays postponed work that was originally scheduled for late August.
The release said slurry seals combine a thin layer of gravel or “aggregate” with an asphalt emulsifier, which is applied to a paved surface to help preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure, and provide a new driving surface.
Residents who normally park their vehicles on streets scheduled for maintenance must remove those vehicles from the street before work starts so crews can apply the slurry seals. Advance notice will be given to every residence prior to the scheduled start dates. Vehicles found on those streets after scheduled start dates will be towed at the owner’s expense.

ROSEBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY TO HOST GEOLOGIST LARRY BROEKER
KQEN News Radio

Roseburg Public Library invites the public to a presentation on Oregon’s Table Rocks presented by geologist Larry Broeker at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 11th.
A city release said Broeker retired from the Umpqua National Forest and speaks regularly about the iconic landforms of southern Oregon and northern California.
Broeker says about 7 million years ago, a massive outpouring of runny lava swept down the ancestral canyon of the Rogue River 44 miles from source fissures thought to be buried beneath Olson Mountain, an extinct High Cascades shield volcano located a few miles east-southeast of Lost Creek Lake.
Broeker said the lava spread across the northern part of the Rogue Valley and solidified to a depth varying between 100 and 200 feet. Over the past seven millennia, tectonic forces and geologic processes have imperceptibly transformed the Rogue Valley into the present-day horseshoe-shaped landforms of Table Rocks.
The free program will be held at the library on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard and is open to the public. For more information contact the library at 492-7050 or email: library@roseburgor.gov
