UMPQUA VALLEY TO SEE MORE DRY WEATHER, WARMING TREND STARTS THURSDAY

KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Valley will see more dry weather, with a warming tend starting Thursday and the potential for triple digits by Sunday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that afternoon highs will remain around seasonal norms for the first part of the week. High start to ramp up on Thursday, increasing each day through early next week. Forecasters said it could hit 100 degrees on Sunday and the low 100’s next Monday.

Weekend high temperatures were 88 degrees on Saturday and 79 degrees on Sunday at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

ROSEBURG CITY COUNCIL WITH SPECIAL MEETING MONDAY NIGHT

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council has a special meeting Monday night, as discussion continues regarding a proposal to turn a section of the Fir Grove Park soccer fields into two turfed fields.

The idea received a lengthy amount of debate at last week’s council meeting, but no decision was made. Staff are asking for authorization to seek grant funding to help pay for the project, which is estimated to cost $3 million. The plan is to ask for $1 million each from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the Umpqua Health Alliance.

The idea of turf fields for soccer has been around for years, but this is the farthest a plan has gotten so far. Supporters have pointed to turf as being better for year-round play and leading to the potential of Roseburg being able to host tournaments that would bring in teams from around the region. Some opponents have cited possible environmental concerns with turf including its overall safety and the potential for the product to eventually break down. The proposed turf area would be adjacent to the South Umpqua River.

Councilors will begin their meeting at 6:00 p.m. with a brief tour of the current soccer fields. Next, the group will check out the turf field at Roseburg High School. The meeting will continue at 7:00 p.m. in the Umpqua Room of the Public Safety Center on Southeast Douglas Avenue.

The meeting will be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page and can be seen later at www.cityofroseburg.org

REEDSPORT CITY COUNCIL WITH WORK SESSION AND REGULAR MEETING

KQEN News Radio

The Reedsport City Council has a busy evening on its Monday night agenda.

Councilors will gather at 6:00 p.m. for a Work Session. They will receive an update on League of Oregon Cities priorities for 2025-26, review draft council rules, and more. At 7:00 p.m. the council will meet in its dual role as the Urban Renewal Agency.

The council session is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. Councilors will consider establishing new rates for garbage services, adding a technical fee that was inadvertently left off the current fee schedule, entering into an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for a grant and increasing the residential water meter equipment purchase and registration fee.

Other items are on the agenda as well. The meeting will be held in the council chambers on Winchester Avenue.

UPTD SUSPENDS WEEKEND SERVICE DUE TO STATEWIDE FUNDING CRISIS

KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Public Transit District recently announced the indefinite suspension of all its weekend transit service, beginning this Saturday, August 9th.

A UPTD release said the move is due to a statewide funding freeze and a breakdown in federal disbursements.

Despite maintaining full compliance with all state and federal requirements, the agency has not received its expected federal funding for the current quarter. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, districts like UP will not receive federal reimbursements until at least the middle of the first quarter of 2026.

UPTD CEO Ben Edtl said, “This crisis is the direct result of bureaucratic gridlock, both at the federal level with the Federal Transit Administration processing delays and at the state level with ODOT’s funding freeze”. Edtl said, “Every special district in Oregon is going to feel this pain”.

The release said UPTD must cut $200,000 in spending between now and early 2026 to keep weekday service in Douglas County. These cuts would be insurmountable if not for the district’s hard won $600,000 in biennial savings, that Edtl said were achieved through smarter route design and improved fleet management.

Edtl said eliminating weekend service is not enough. Additional cuts are being planned. UPTD will publicly announce any additional cuts that affect service and ridership. Look for updates at: www.umpquatransit.org
