GOVERNOR DECLARES DROUGHT EMERGENCY FOR DOUGLAS COUNTY

KQEN News Radio

On Monday, Governor Tina Kotek declared a drought in Douglas County.

Executive Order 25-18 directs state agencies to coordinate and prioritize assistance in the region.

The Governor’s release said according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Douglas County has been experiencing severe drought since July 15th. Additionally, below normal precipitation, above normal temperatures, below normal streamflow, and soil moisture conditions further indicate that drought conditions are present in the county. Drier and warmer than normal conditions during spring and early summer resulted in a decline in streamflow conditions, despite normal to above normal snowpack conditions.

The Oregon Drought Readiness Council, a standing body comprised of natural resource, public health, and emergency response agencies, heard from the Douglas County Board of Commissioners in July requesting the Governor’s drought declaration.

Governor Kotek also declared a drought in Morrow and Union counties and has done so for five counties so far this calendar year.

BLM TIMBER SALES TO OFFER UP TO 58.5 MILLION BOARD FEET

KQEN News Radio

The Bureau of Land Management will offer eight timber sales this month, totaling 58.5 million board feet to be harvested from 2,223 public acres across western Oregon, including in Douglas County.

A BLM release said timber produced by these sales will provide critical supplies for construction and other industries, and support jobs across local economies.

BLM Oregon/Washington State Director Barry Bushue said, “BLM-managed forests and woodlands have an abundance of timber resources that contribute to our domestic timber needs”. Bushue said, “BLM timber sales ensure we retain our domestic timber supply, which promotes local job growth and reduces reliance on imported building supplies”.

The Roseburg District will offer the Noble Steed Timber sale. It is 7.8 million board feet on 383 public acres and is near Oakland in Douglas County. The BLM will accept written and oral bids at 10:00 a.m. on August 26th at the Roseburg District Office on Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard in Roseburg.

Other sales will be held in the Coos Bay, Medford, and Northwest Oregon District’s in Salem and Springfield.

The release said each year, sales managed by the BLM’s forestry program in Oregon and Washington support approximately 2,000 local jobs and generate more than $1 billion for local economies. Revenue from timber sold on O&C lands is shared between the U.S. Treasury and 18 western Oregon counties.

REEDSPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT WITH WATER SYSTEM/HYDRANT FLUSHING

KQEN News Radio

The Reedsport Fire Department is performing water system/fire hydrant flushing through Friday.

A city release said all residents and users are advised that there may be a temporary drop in water pressure during the system flushing process. After flushing is complete, there may be a “milky” coloration to the water. These are bubbles and will resolve shortly. There may also be a small amount of sediment that may be present due to the flushing operations

If either of these conditions are present, customers should run water until conditions improve. Anyone with questions should contact the Reedsport Public Works Department at 541-271-3207.
