Today's Fire Weather Forecast

Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California
National Weather Service Medford, OR
229 AM PDT Thu Aug 7 2025

Gusty east to northeast winds are expected from Thursday night through Saturday night, particularly over the coastal ridges in Curry and western Josephine counties, as well as the mountains in western Siskiyou County. These winds will bring moderate to locally poor overnight humidity recoveries in those areas.

Valleys west of the Cascades will experience gusty winds and low humidity on Friday and Saturday, especially during the afternoons and evenings.

Dry weather will continue through at least the middle of next week. Afternoon temperatures will be just below seasonal norms today but are expected to trend hotter from Friday into early next week. An upper trough moving across the area will bring gusty breezes east of the Cascades this afternoon and evening. Tonight through Saturday night, gusty east to northeast winds across mid-slopes and ridges will result in moderate to locally poor overnight recoveries in Fire Zones 618, 619, and 280. On Friday and Saturday, valleys west of the Cascades should anticipate gusty afternoon winds and dry humidities. Winds will decrease Sunday and Monday, but hotter temperatures are expected to develop.

MERKLEY, DEXTER: CONGRESS MUST PROTECT FARMWORKERS FROM SMOKE & HEAT

KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and Third-District U.S. Representative Maxine Dexter introduced the Farmworker Smoke and Excessive Heat Protection Act.

A release said the legislation would put safeguards in place for farm workers facing the dangers of wildfire smoke and extreme weather.

Merkley said, “Climate chaos is creating hotter, longer summers and leading to a deadlier wildfire season, putting many farmworkers at risk of smoke – and health related issues on the job”. Merkley said, “Protecting them from the dangers of hazardous smoke is good for workers, good for employers, and good for the public who rely on their products”.

Dexter said, “As a lung and critical care doctor, I’ve seen how wildfire smoke destroys lungs and lives. Farm workers are among the most exposed, laboring in hazardous air to keep food on our tables.” Dexter said, “Their health and safety are not optional, and Oregon has long led the way in protecting outdoor workers”.

FIRE DANGER RAISED TO EXTREME ACROSS DOUGLAS DISTRICT: PUBLIC RESTRICTIONS INCREASE

The Roseburg Receiver

The Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA) has announced that, effective Sunday, August 10, 2025 at 12:01 a.m., the fire danger level across the Douglas District will be elevated to EXTREME. This change applies to all private, county, state, and Bureau of Indian Affairs land within the district.

While the Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) remains at Level 3 for regulated use areas DG-1, DG-2, UA-1, UA-2, and adjacent forestlands, the public will now face additional restrictions designed to reduce wildfire risk.

What’s Prohibited for the Public During Extreme Fire Danger?

  • Use of Non-Industrial Power Saws:
Operating chainsaws or similar equipment is now prohibited.
  • Metal Work:
Cutting, grinding, or welding of metal is not allowed.
  • Grass Work:
Cutting, trimming, or mowing of dried or cured grass is banned.
  • Power-Driven Machinery:
Using machinery for non-industrial improvement or development on private property is not permitted.

Anyone seeking an exception must receive written approval from the State Forester or an authorized representative.

These restrictions will remain in place until further notice, or until they are modified by a new order from the State Forester. Detailed maps showing affected areas are available at the State Forester’s Office in Salem and at district offices.

For more details on terminology or legal definitions, residents can refer to ORS 477.001 and OAR 629-041-0005.

DFPA urges all residents and landowners to follow these restrictions closely to help protect the community during this period of extreme wildfire danger.
