Roseburg Area Morning News
EXTREME HEAT WATCH SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY
KQEN News Radio

An Extreme Heat Watch is in effect for Central Douglas County from 10:00 a.m. Sunday through 2:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said dangerously hot temperatures near 100 to 105 degrees are possible. Very warm overnight temperatures of 65 to 70 degrees are possible as well.
The Watch area includes portions of the Umpqua Basin and applies to Roseburg, Camas Valley, Elkton, Drain, Sutherlin, Glendale, Riddle and Canyonville.
Forecasters said heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat. Warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief from hot daytime conditions.
Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
STATE POLICE JAIL TWO ON DRUG CHARGES FOLLOWING DISTURBANCE
KQEN News Radio

Troopers with Oregon State Police jailed two people following a disturbance along Interstate 5 on Wednesday afternoon.
An OSP report said at 12:50 p.m. troopers responded to the northbound lanes of the freeway, approximately three miles north of Glendale. The suspects left the scene in a pickup, and a traffic stop was conducted. During the investigation, it was discovered that both people were in possession of a large quantity of suspected fentanyl. A firearm was seized from the vehicle, and it was discovered that the male had a felony criminal history.
Also, during the investigation, indicators of impairment were observed in the male and the female and both reportedly admitted to driving prior to being stopped.
43-year-old Merril Lesly was charged with unlawful possession and distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance, being a felon in possession of a firearm and driving under the influence of intoxicants. He was detained on $5,000 bail.
37-year-old Amber Lesly was charged with unlawful possession and distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance and driving under the influence of intoxicants. She was held on $3,000 bail.
Both people were released on Thursday.

HOYLE AND TOP DEMOCRATS CONDEMN FEDERAL WORKFORCE PURGE
KQEN News Radio

This week, 4th District Congresswoman Val Hoyle and a number of top Democratic lawmakers condemned President Trump’s federal workforce purge.
The members of Congress introduced a series of bills to halt the Reductions in Force process to carry out what they believe are politically motivated firings across the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service.
The release said these cuts would gut the federal workforce responsible for fighting wildfires, managing public lands, protecting water, advancing clean energy, and honoring tribal obligations. The group claims that Interior has already lost 11 percent of its staff while the Forest Service has lost 15 percent of staff – driven by forced retirements, firings and DOGE cuts.
Hoyle said, “You don’t fix government by firing the people who make it work”. Hoyle is the Ranking Member of the Water, Wildlife and Fisheries Subcommittee. Hoyle said, “These attacks on federal workers hurt our ability to manage forests, prepare for emergencies, and keep families safe. It’s wrong and I’m proud to be a part of the effort to push back”.
The release said the bills impose an immediate moratorium on agency firings through the RIF process to protect public service delivery while Congress investigates DOGE and assesses long-term staffing needs.
ROSEBURG’S SPLASH PAD OPEN THROUGH LABOR DAY
KQEN News Radio

With a heat wave on the way, there is still time to cool off at Roseburg’s splash pad.
A city release said the Fir Grove Park Splash Pad is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to dusk through Labor Day. It is located just off West Harvard Avenue behind the Umpqua Valley Arts Center.
The interactive spray park offers a fun oasis where people of all ages can beat the summertime heat – something that is especially welcome when late summer temperatures can soar into the triple digits.
Shade is limited so Roseburg Parks and Recreation staff encourage residents to bring water, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses.
The spray park is a free seasonal offering that operates each summer.

NEW WATER SAFETY SIGNS TO BE INSTALLED AT BEN IRVING RESERVOIR
KQEN News Radio

The YMCA of Douglas County, in collaboration with Douglas County Parks and FX Signs, will install two new water safety signs at Ben Irving Reservoir on Thursday, August 14th at 10:00 a.m.
A release said the reservoir has been the site of multiple drownings. This initiative aims to raise awareness, keep it a safe and enjoyable recreational area, and prevent future tragedies.
The two new signs will include:
*A “No Swimming” sign to be placed on the dock, reinforcing safety on and round the boat dock
*A Life Jacket Station sign, offering guidance on proper fit and encouraging visitors to take and use a life jacket if they don’t have one
As part of this effort, the YMCA of Douglas County will continue to restock the life jacket station through its annual Free Youth Life Jacket Distribution Initiative. To date, the Y has given away more than 3,700 properly fitted life jackets to families across the county to help prevent drowning and promote safe water recreation.
This project is part of the YMCA’s larger Water Safety Mission – to educate, equip, and empower the community to stay safe in and around water.
