DOUGLAS COUNTY MORNING NEWS
ROSEBURG SETS RECORD HIGH FOR THE DATE ON WEDNESDAY
KQEN News Radio

Roseburg had a record high temperature for the date on Wednesday.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 67 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. The previous record high for December 10th was 66 degrees, set in 2014.
Forecasters said it is very rare to set a record high for the date in December, but exactly when it happened last was not immediately available.
The Umpqua Valley is expected to see above normal high temperatures for the next several days. A chance of rain is forecast for Sunday, with a new front bringing more rain slated to hit the region beginning on Monday.
OREGON’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS 5.2 PERCENT IN SEPTEMBER
KQEN News Radio

On Wednesday, the Oregon Employment Department released monthly employment and unemployment data for September 2025, after a significant delay due to the federal government shutdown.
An OED release said Oregon’s Unemployment Rate was 5.2 percent in September and 5.0 percent in August, after increasing for much of the past two years from the recent low of 3.6 percent during spring 2023. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in August and 4.4 percent in September.
State Employment Economist Gail Krumenaer said on September, Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment rose by 3,300 jobs, following a revised gain of 3,500 jobs in August. Krumenauer said September’s gains were largest in health care and social assistance, which gained 1,300 jobs. Construction and professional and business services both added 700 jobs. Losses were largest in financial activities which shed 700 jobs.
OED said health care and social assistance continued its rapid expansion of the past several years, adding 11,400 jobs or 3.7 percent, between September 2024 and September 2025.
Construction employment was down slightly this summer compared with the two prior summers. September employment totaled 116,100 jobs, which was 1,600 jobs or 1.4 percent below its level in September 2024.
Krumenauer said professional and business services added 700 in September, but lost jobs since early 2023. Since its peak of 268,900 jobs in March 2023, it has declined to 253,700 jobs in September. That is a loss of 15,200 jobs or 5.7 percent. Each of the three component industries trended downward since early 2023. Over the last 12 months, cutbacks included:
- Administrative and water services were down 4,900 jobs or 4.8 percent
- Professional and technical services shuttered 2,300 jobs or 2.1 percent
- Management of companies and enterprises lost 1,000 jobs or 2.0 percent
OED said manufacturing slipped by 200 jobs in September and is down 9,600 jobs or 5.1 percent, since September 2024, with both durable goods manufacturing and nondurable goods manufacturing each down close to 5 percent.
REPRESENTATIVE HOYLES ANNOUNCES TELE-TOWN HALL FOR MONDAY
KQEN News Radio

Representative Val Hoyle has announced she will host a Tele-Town Hall next Monday, December 15th.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Representative Hoyle will share end of the year updates about what’s going on in Congress and how it’s impacting communities in her district. It is also an opportunity to ask Representative Hoyle questions and get answers directly from her.
To join the Tele-Town Hall, constituents of Oregon’s 4th District should fill out a form that is linked: https://hoyle.house.gov/media/press-releases
Representative Hoyle said the Tele-Town hall is done over the phone with her and other constituents in the district. She said it’s a way for her to be in conversation with as many people as possible while she remains in Washington D.C. for votes. After filling out the form for the event, participants will receive a call at the designated start time with an invitation to stay on the line. After joining the call, attendees will receive instructions on how to ask a question.
UCAN HOSTING WINTER WARMING CENTER VOLUNTEER TRAINING SESSIONS
KQEN News Radio

The United Community Action Network is hosting winter warming center volunteer training sessions this month.
A UCAN release said the organization is recruiting volunteers to help out at the Roseburg Warming Center, a temporary shelter that will be located inside St. Joseph’s Catholic Church gymnasium on West Stanton Street. The shelter’s backup location will be at the Housing Authority of Douglas County’s James D. Myer Activity Center, just a few blocks away, also on West Stanton Street.
The shelter will only be open when the overnight low temperature is 30 degrees or colder, or when nighttime lows are 32 degrees or colder, with additional factors including fog, precipitation, wind, consecutive days or overall weather patterns.
Two 90-minute training sessions will be offered next week at UCAN’s main office at 251 Northeast Garden Valley Boulevard, Suite 205. Sessions will be held on Wednesday, December 17th at 5:30 p.m. and on Thursday, December 18th at 10:00 a.m. A third training session will be offered at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 29th.
Interested volunteers can email UCAN at: volunteer@ucancap.org
The warming center will also offer a warm meal to everyone staying overnight. Warming center doors will open for check-in at 5:30 p.m. on activation nights and close the next day at 8:00 a.m.
Last year, UCAN opened the Roseburg Warming Center for 18 nights in December, January, and February, when more than 100 people were served a hot meal and given a safe place to rest. The warming center provided 408 shelter bed nights last winter during extreme temperatures.
Those who are unable to volunteer but still want to contribute can make a donation to the warming center at: https://ucancap.networkforgood.com
