Forecasters at the National Weather Service said the region will see a mix of dry and wet conditions with several days of moisture in the forecast leading up to Christmas day. Highs will mainly be in the 50s with overnight lows in the 40s. The weather pattern appears to cool slightly after Christmas and remains that way through the end of the year.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said wet snow is expected with accumulations of up to 2 inches.
The Advisory area includes the south central and southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to Crater Lake National Park, Diamond Lake and the Cascade passes along highways 62, 138, 230 and 58.

DOUGLAS COUNTY GOVERNMENT OFFICES TO CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS/NEW YEARS
KQEN News Radio

Douglas County government has announced two holiday closures.
A county release said Commissioners Chris Boice, Tim Freeman and Tom Kress would like to remind citizens that government offices located at the courthouse, on Southeast Douglas Avenue in Roseburg, as well as the Justice Building, courthouse annex in Reedsport, transfer stations, fairgrounds, museum and all external government offices will be closed to the public on Wednesday, December 25th as well as Wednesday, January 1st. This is in observance of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day holidays
The Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum in Winchester Bay will be open on January 1st for normal business hours and tours. Additionally, some county departments might have limited hours or be lightly staffed during the holiday season. Residents should call ahead before visiting to see if the department they need has staff available to provide assistance to them.
The release said as always, even when county government offices are closed, many officials and public employees are still working on special, routine or emergency projects. That includes the commissioners, juvenile staff, public works, emergency management, parks and Salmon Harbor departments. Deputies, 911 communications, and other Sheriff’s Office staff will continue to provide law enforcement protection and emergency assistance for residents. Those who have an emergency can still call 911. To reach dispatch outside of an emergency, call the non-emergency number at 440-4471.
’25 PITCH NIGHT SCHEDULE: 4 EVENTS AND NEW FORMAT
KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Economic Development Partnership has announced the schedule for the 2025 Umpqua Growth Talk Pitch Night series, along with the introduction of a new format for next year.
A Partnership release said UEDP’s Pitch Night program aims to provide financial and advisory support to emerging businesses in Douglas County, fostering their growth and increasing their chances of success. The Partnership believes that thriving small businesses create employment opportunities, support family-wage jobs and help retain talent.
For the 2025 series, UEDP is inviting small businesses and startups that are three years old or younger to apply for participation in three qualifying events on March 6, June 19 and September 4. As in previous years, the top three winners, along with an audience choice winner, will receive prize money. Notably, the 2025 series introduces a significant change: the top two winners from each of the three qualifying events will advance to the Grand Prize Night on October 23, where they will compete for an expanded prize pool and the title of 2025 Pitch Night Grand Prize winner.
UEDP Executive Director Brian Prawitz said, “We are excited about the direction Pitch Night is heading and look forward to building upon the momentum generated in 2024”.
While the final prize amounts are being determined, participants in the first three Pitch Nights will compete to share a prize pool of at least $2,000, with the October Grand Prize Night offering a significantly larger prize pool, expected to exceed $10,000.
Since its inception in 2019, Pitch Night events have generated nearly $80,000 for local entrepreneurs. Participants also benefit from valuable guidance and feedback from Pitch Night coaches, who assist with pitch preparation and offer business advice during a practice session held one week prior to each event.

NEW HOPE FOR HEART HEALTH PROJECT
KQEN News Radio

H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participants have scheduled an event to promote heart health.
The Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is preparing for the 108th graduation ceremony on February 3, 2025, at 5:15 p.m. in the community hall building at the fairgrounds.
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said graduate hopefuls Demetrius McCain and Ryan Guske have partnered to create an event at Parkview Skating Center called NEW HOPE for Heart Health in partnership with Safe at Home and FARA – Family, Faith and Relationship Advocates. Both participants have a special tie to the topic and want to promote better awareness in the community. McCain said his brother recently passed away from heart disease and he is dedicating the event to Nathaniel Charles Edward McCain III. Guske stated, “This project came to life for me because of being in recovery and finding out I have A Fibrillation of the heart”.
McCain and Guske have chosen to support the local Shaw Heart and Vascular Center in Roseburg with proceeds from the event and raffles staying local for the program. Mercy Foundation has created a safe way to donate online to a specific page made for the event. A QR is provided on the flyer, or a person could go to the donate website from the foundation: https://mercyfoundation.ejoinme.org/
Thanks to early sponsorships, the first 100 people to attend will be able to skate, have light refreshments, an opportunity for a 50/50 raffle and other raffle options. The event will be on Sunday, January 12th. A number of local community partners have already pledged their support. To help or donate call the organizers at 458-280-2056 or 458-310-0421

WINTER WHALE WATCH WEEK RETURNS TO OREGON COAST
KQEN News Radio

Oregon State Parks will host Winter Whale Watch Week on the Oregon Coast from Friday December 27th through Tuesday, December 31st.
An OPRD release said trained volunteers will be stationed at 15 sites each day from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to help visitors spot gray whales on their southbound migration to the calving lagoons in Mexico.
The sites are some of the best places to see whales on the Oregon coast. A map of volunteer-staffed sites are available online: https://oregonstateparks.org/index.cfm?do=thingstodo.dsp_whaleWatching
Park Ranger Peter McBride said, “Now is the perfect time to see whales as their population rebounds on the Oregon Coast”.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced an end to an Unusual Mortality Event impacting gray whales. Since then, the estimated population has increased by roughly 30 percent from 14,530 last year to 19,260 this year, according to NOAA. The numbers are on the rise overall, but the calf count is still low as the population continues to rebound.
The Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay will be open each day from 10:00 a.m. to 4;00 p.m. Visitors to the center can enjoy interactive whale exhibits and take in the panoramic ocean views. Binoculars are provided. Rangers from Oregon State Parks will also be on hand to answer questions about the whales.
Visitors are encouraged to share their photos and videos from Winter Whale Watch Week on social media using #OregonStateParks and #ORWhaleWatch24.
