Douglas Electric deals with early-morning outage

KQEN News Radio

Over 3,300 Douglas Electric Cooperative members lost power early Wednesday morning, but the utility has managed to get power restored to more than half of its customers.

Phil Bigler with Douglas Electric said that a wide-scale outage was reported around 2:30 a.m. affecting all customers in Drain, Elkton and Scottsburg, with a large number of members in Lookingglass and Melrose areas also affected. A small number of Co-op member were also without power in the Tenmile Lake, Lower Smith River and Camas Valley areas.

Crews were able to restore power to the Lookingglass and Melrose areas by 5:15 a.m. and the Drain substation was re-energized around 5:20 a.m.

Bigler reports that more than 1,400 customers were still without power as of 5:30 a.m.

As of this report on the Morning Scoop, there are 820 total outages in Douglas county (121 Pacific Power, 682 Douglas Electric, & 17 Central Lincoln)

Heavy Rain This Week Could Raise Rivers, Cause Nuisance Flooding Across Southern Oregon

The Roseburg Receiver

The National Weather Service in Medford is warning of multiple rounds of heavy rain expected this week across Coos, Curry, Douglas, and Josephine counties, with the potential for high water on creeks, streams, and rivers.

According to a Hydrologic Outlook issued Tuesday afternoon, the first round of rain is expected tonight into early Wednesday. Forecasts call for 1 to 2 inches of rainfall across much of Douglas, Coos, Curry, and Josephine counties, with up to 3 inches possible in the coastal mountains of Curry County.

A second and stronger system, an atmospheric river, is expected to arrive early Thursday and persist through Friday afternoon. This system could bring an additional 3 to 6 inches of rain, with the highest totals again expected in Curry County.

Forecasters say small streams and creeks are likely to run high, which may lead to nuisance flooding, localized ponding of water on roadways, and drainage issues during periods of heavier rainfall. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Significant rises on mainstem rivers are expected, including rivers in the Umpqua Basin, though the National Weather Service says the overall risk of widespread river flooding remains low at this time. Officials cite relatively dry conditions leading into the storm and minimal snowpack as factors limiting larger flood concerns.

Meteorologists will continue monitoring river levels, particularly in the Coquille and Umpqua basins, as rainfall totals become clearer. The National Weather Service notes that flooding scenarios could change, and flood watches or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware, monitor forecasts, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions later this week.

Downed Trees Reported on Roadways After Overnight Storm

The Roseburg Receiver

Overnight rain and strong winds caused trees to come down near the Hauser Scale area in Coos County. The impacts were reported during the late night and early morning hours.

Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling, as hazardous conditions may persist. Landslides, falling rocks, and additional downed trees are possible along roadways and near hillsides due to saturated ground and ongoing weather conditions.

Motorists should slow down, watch for debris, and be prepared for changing conditions, especially in rural and hillside areas.
