ROSEBURG EXPECTING NEAR RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FRIDAY

KQEN News Radio

Only a day away from the official start of winter, the Umpqua Valley is expecting a near record high temperature for the date on Friday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury is forecast to reach near 62 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

The record high for December 20th is 64 degrees, set in 2019. Forecasters said Friday’s weather pattern shows the area getting out of overnight clouds and fog sooner, which should lead to additional sunshine.

Roseburg already set new record high temperatures for the date on Tuesday and Wednesday, getting to 65 degrees and 61 degrees respectively.

High temperatures should drop back to the low 50s for the weekend with rain expected. Precipitation will continue for much of next week.

HIGH SURF ADVISORY FOR COASTAL AREAS THIS WEEKEND

KQEN News Radio

A High Surf Advisory is in effect from Saturday at 7:00 a.m. to Sunday at 10:00 p.m. for coastal areas on the south central and southern Oregon coast.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said large breaking waves of 21 to 24 feet are expected.

The Advisory area includes the beaches and shorelines of Douglas, Coos and Curry counties.

Forecasters said large breaking waves will create hazardous conditions along and within the surf zone and could inundate beaches and low-lying shorelines. Beach erosion is possible, and exposed infrastructure may be damaged.

A strong long period swell will arrive Monday and bring the chance for High Surf warning conditions with large breaking waves of 24 to 28 feet.

Forecasters said people should stay away from the surf zone and off jetties. Area beaches may become hazardous due to dangerous surf conditions.

CONGRESSMAN BENTZ ANNOUNCES APP CHALLENGE WINNER

KQEN News Radio

Congressman Cliff Bentz has announced that Yahir Conejo-Garcia, Bryson Jeppeson and Yael Estrada Gutierrez from Hermiston High School, are the 2024 winners of the Congressional App Challenge for Oregon’s District 2.

A release said the students created “The Room Builder 3000”. It’s a web application that helps users design and furnish a room. The students overcame many challenges by utilizing their knowledge of code management, html, and 3D modeling and learned the value of working as a team. Bentz was also pleased with the team’s creativity and skill. Bentz said, “The Congressional App Challenge is to encourage students to pursue careers in coding, math or science. I hope Yahir, Bryson and Yael continue to improve and develop their coding, and teamwork skills”.

The release said Bentz encourages students from across Congressional District 2 to create and submit apps for the 2025 competition. Find more information at: https://bentz.house.gov/appchallenge
