Roseburg Area Morning News

DENSE FOG ADVISORY THROUGH 10:00 A.M. MONDAY

KQEN News Radio

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect through 10:00 a.m. Monday morning for much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said visibility of one quarter mile or less in dense fog is expected.

The Advisory includes central Douglas County, Josephine County and eastern Curry County. It applies to Interstate 5 and highways 199, 138, 38 and 42 as well as the cities of Grants Pass, Cave Junction, Canyonville, Roseburg, Sutherlin and Elkton.

Forecasters said low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Drivers should slow down, use their headlights, and leave plenty of distance between their vehicle and the one ahead of them.

HIGH SURF WARNING THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY

KQEN News Radio

A High Surf Warning is in effect for the south-central Oregon coast through 4:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said dangerously high waves of 28 to 31 feet are expected.

The Warning area applies to the beaches and shorelines of Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties.

Forecasters said extremely large breaking waves will create very hazardous conditions along beaches and shorelines. Waves will inundate beaches and surge into normally dry areas. Infrastructure damage and significant beach erosion can be expected.

The highest surf is expected through Monday afternoon. Conditions are forecast to slowly improve on Tuesday. Another round of dangerous surf conditions can be expected late Wednesday through Thursday, if not longer.

Forecasters said beaches and coastlines will become hazardous due to very large and life-threatening surf conditions.  Residents should stay off of beaches, rocks, jetties, piers and other waterside infrastructure.

WARM CONNECTION PROJECT – H.O.P.E. DRUG COURT

KQEN News Radio

H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participants have scheduled an event to provide warm food and warming items to local unhoused individuals.

The Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court program has scheduled the 108th graduation ceremony on February 3rd, at 5:15 p.m. in the community hall of the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Gradate hopefuls Catherine Silva and Shane Bennett have partnered to create an event during a standard Connecting Point day on Thursday, January 16th at the Adapt Opioid Treatment Center parking lot, located at 406 Northeast Winchester Street in Roseburg from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Connecting Point is a mobile navigation program created from discussions and concerns brought forward in the Behavioral Health and Housing subcommittee to the Local Public Safety Coordinating Council. It is comprised of many local organizations who have volunteers available to attend all or multiple locations during the Monday through Friday sites, and serve Myrtle Creek, Winston, Sutherlin, several locations in Roseburg and recently adding Drain. Services at Connecting Point location include a shower trailer, Naloxone, hygiene kits, assurance phones, mental health and substance use service connections, employment services, clothing and more.

Catherine Silva has been working to find sponsors to assist with the cost of a spaghetti feed, by either food donations or money. Shane Bennett is reaching out for assistance to gather warming items such as socks, gloves, scarves, and hand/foot warmers. He has arranged a drop off donation box at the local HIV Alliance office located at 647 West Luellen Drive in Roseburg.

PUC CUTS PACIFICCORP’S REQUESTED JANUARY 1 GENERAL RATE INCREASE

KQEN News Radio

Late last week, the Oregon Public Utility Commission issued its decision in the generale rate case filing by PacifiCorp, approving an overall increase for all customer types combined, including residential, commercial, and industrial customers, of approximately 8.5 percent to take effect on January 1st.

In its initial rate case filing, PacifiCorp requested a 17.9 percent increase. After a year of scrutiny, the commission reduced the utility’s request through its decisions on more than 60 contested issues.

An OPUC release said in addition to the general rate case for capital and operations expenses, rate changes on January 1 will also include the annual adjustment for forecasted 2025 power purchase costs and other miscellaneous rate increases and decreases. For residential customers specifically, the overall increase from the combined decisions is expected to be approximately 9.8 percent. Finalized rate changes for residential, commercial and industrial customers will come after PUC review of utility compliance filings with the decision and final decisions on other miscellaneous rate filings at the commission’s December 31st regular meeting.

Complete information about the PUC decision is available at: https://www.oregon.gov/puc/news-events/Documents/PR-202426.pdf
