DOUGLAS COUNTY MORNING NEWS

AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY CONTINUES UNTIL WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

Article by KQEN News Radio

An Air Stagnation Advisory remains in effect until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon for central Douglas County and its eastern foothills, along with much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said air quality is likely to worsen due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will trap pollutants. The Advisory area incudes valley locations west of the Cascades in Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties and east of the Cascades in Klamath and Lake counties.

Forecasters told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the stagnant air means it is unlikely that the forecast high temperature will be reached. A system moving up from the south late Wednesday will bring light rain which should help stir up the atmosphere and lead to clearing skies. Increased rain is expected for the upcoming weekend.

Poor air quality will cause issues for people with respiratory problems. Those with respiratory illness should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution during periods of stagnant air.

The high temperature Monday at the Roseburg Regional Airport was 40 degrees. 48 degrees is the normal temperature for this part of December. No precipitation was recorded.

REFERENDUM SECURES A QUARTER MILLION SIGNATURES AS OF MONDAY

Article by KQEN News Radio

Monday afternoon, the chief petitioners to the gas tax referendum turned in additional signatures to State Elections officials, bringing their total count to 250,900 Oregon voters who have signed the petition.

A release from the Right to Vote on the Gas Tax PAC campaign said this is triple the 78,116 valid signatures needed to qualify, making it the largest and quickest volunteer referendum drive in Oregon history.

State Senator Bruce Starr, one of the chief petitioners for the effort said, “Oregonians from every corner of the state spent their holiday season gathering signatures”. Starr said, “Because of their hard work, the will of Oregon voters will not be ignored. The credit for this success goes to the tireless volunteers across this great state – they are nothing short of amazing”.

Fellow chief petitioner State Representative Ed Diehl said, “the people of Oregon have spoke lout and clear. They expected ODOT to be accountable for the money it already has, and they expect road safety and maintenance to be the highest priority – not an afterthought”.

The Right to Vote on the Gas Tax PAC campaign had previously turned in over 190,000 signatures to the State Elections Office for early verification on December 15th which is allowed for petition drives that cross the legal threshold to qualify. As State Elections has been reviewing those signatures, the campaign has continued to gather signatures until their deadline this week.

WATERMAIN BREAK CLEANUP CONTINUES ALONG WEST HARVARD AVENUE

Article by KQEN News Radio

The City of Roseburg is continuing to clean up and make repairs following a watermain break at the intersection of West Harvard Avenue and West Umpqua Street on Saturday night, December 20th.

Public Works Director Ryan Herinckx told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the water line was repaired on Tuesday, December 23rd by around 6:00 p.m. but has remained shut off from the system and customers. Herinckx said on Wednesday, December 24th, the line was filled with water, and the disinfection process began.

Due to the size of the break, the disinfection process requires that crews fill the water line with water that has a minimum of 25 parts per million of chlorine. The water is required to stay in place in the pipe for a minimum of 24 hours before flushing.

Herinckx said that due to the Christmas holiday, the flushing took place on Monday. Samples are being taken to Umpqua Research in Myrtle Creek for testing. If the first set of samples are negative for coliforms, a second set will be taken a minimum of 24 hours after the first set and sent to the lab for testing. Herinckx said once negative test results are received from the lab, crews can bring the watermain on Harvard Avenue from West Umpqua Street to West Bellows Street back online. He expects that this will take place on Wednesday.

Herinckx said the process would normally have been quicker but was slowed due to the holiday closures with contractors and Umpqua Research.

On Monday, the contractor completed repair work to the storm pipe and sanitary sewer pipe that had to be temporarily moved to repair the water pipe. The contractor plans to pave the damaged area on Tuesday.

ENROLLED WOMEN VETERANS: GYNECOLOGY APPOINTMENTS WITHOUT REFERRAL

Article by KQEN News Radio

Information from the Roseburg VA Medical Center said enrolled women veterans can now schedule gynecology appointments without needing a referral from their primary care physician.

Patients can still choose to continue receiving routine women’s health care, screening and services from their regular women’s health and primary care teams. Patients may be charged copays for VA gynecology care for conditions not related to their military service, depending on their service-connected disability rating and income.

The VA offers care for women veterans who are pregnant or interested in becoming pregnant. Routine prenatal care, labor and delivery and immediate postpartum care are provided to veterans through care in the community. Veterans are connected to this care through their primary care team, who are critical partners in their health during pregnancy and postpartum. Veterans who are pregnant are encouraged to contact the VA maternity care coordinator at the Roseburg VACHS MCC at 670-2458.

For more information call the Women’s Veteran Program Manager at 440-1000 extension 41326.

DRIVER TAKEN TO HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SEMI-TRUCK CRASH ON SATURDAY

Article by KQEN News Radio

The driver was taken to the hospital following a semi-truck crash on Saturday.

An Oregon State Police report said just before 3:00 p.m. troopers were dispatched to the wreck on Interstate 5 southbound near the Riddle/Tri City Exit 103. Medical personnel on scene advised that the driver and sole occupant likely had a medical emergency prior to the crash, and they believed that is what led to the vehicle crashing off the freeway.

The driver, a 55-year-old man from Washington State, was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center with what were believed to be minor injuries. The driver was contacted at the hospital and had no memory of the crash. Witnesses and coworkers stated there was no bad driving prior to the crash. The driver showed no signs of impairment.

The Oregon Department of Transportation, Canyonville Fire South Umpqua Fire Department and Tri City Rural Fire Protection District all assisted with the crash scene.
